Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Histology Technician to join our clinical laboratory team. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in the preparation and analysis of tissue samples, contributing to accurate diagnoses and patient care. This position requires a strong understanding of laboratory procedures and techniques, as well as a commitment to maintaining high standards of quality and safety in the laboratory environment.
Duties
- Assisting with accessioning of specimens, making sure that requisitions are fully and correctly filled out, that all case materials match, and that case information is carefully entered into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Operating the microwave processor to dehydrate and preserve tissue specimens. Reagents should be monitored and changed according to established protocols. Appropriate microwave protocols should be selected for different tissue sizes and/or types.
- Embedding fixed tissue by correctly orienting different tissue types into appropriately sized molds. The contents of each cassette should be checked against the gross prior to embedding. Excess paraffin should be removed from the blocks without damaging any tissue.
- Using a microtome, sections of human tissue are mounted onto slides for examination. Sections are to be cut to the appropriate thickness, free of wrinkles and/or excessive chatter, and aligned on the slide. Slides and blocks are to be checked against each other before sectioning.
- Responsible for monitoring and rotating H&E staining reagents. The appropriate run should be checked before loading each rack. A control slide should be run and approved after each reagent rotation.
- Performing special stains according to posted procedures, including checking a control to verify positive testing. Tech will also prepare slides for outside immunohistochemistry procedures.
Qualification
- Education/Experience: Associate degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. See CLIA Regulations, 42CFR493, 1489 and 1491.
