Department:Design Civil Transmission - Alabama Power Company & Mississippi Power Company (part of Southern Company)
Location:Remote - but must live within 1 hour of The Energy Center (3535 Colonnade Parkway, Birmingham, AL 35243)
Work Schedule: At the beginning, this person will need to work in the office for onboarding and learning how the projects are done. After that, they can work remotely.

JOB SUMMARY:
- The Structural Engineer in the Transmission Civil Design organization will be responsible for designing and analyzing new or existing substation structures and foundations
- The Structural Engineer will also design transmission line foundations and provide design assistance to transmission line structures
- This position requires 5-7 years heavy industrial / power plant experience, and an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (or similar)
- Professional Engineering (P.E.) registration/certification is a plus, but not required
- Providing structural engineering services and field support
- Conducting preparation of designs and calculations
- Conducting site visits
- Producing and checking structural steel design calculations and drawings.
- Detailed knowledge of structural steel and concrete design principles and industry methodologies
- Significant structural steel connection design experience
- Proficiency with structural codes and standards
- Extensive knowledge of heavy industrial structures and components
- Strong computer skills – proficiency with structural computer programs such as MathCAD and STAAD PRO, working knowledge of ANSYS
- Working knowledge of OSHA regulations
- Able to coordinate and manage multiple small to mid-sized, single or multi-discipline projects
- Able to perform structural inspections and provide written reports
- Strong problem solving and decision making abilities
- Ability to build effective relationships with internal customers, design engineering staff and/or vendors
- Design experience with electric utility transmission structures is a plus, but not required
