Job Title: Recess Coach
FLSA Classification: Nonexempt
Salary Range: $13-$15/hour
Reports to: Site Director
Starting Date: June 6, 2024
Summer Hours: 9:30am - 5:30pm
School Year Hours: At Minimum: 10am-3:30pm. More hours available afterwards.
Summary/objective The Recess Coach implements a safe & healthy TagTeam Recess program through systems, culture, and games. Throughout the year, the Recess Coach completes Playworks TagTeam certification coursework in person and online. This is a partnership between Muncie Community Schools and Boys & Girls Clubs of Muncie.
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.
- Every staff member is expected to cultivate and maintain positive donor, member, and community relationships.
- Implement effective equipment distribution system & ensure boundaries are visible.
- Proactively focus your movement to where adult support is needed.
- Engage other adults on the playground to participate in safe & healthy play.
- Have an effective plan for inclement weather.
- Model and promote positive language (verbal/nonverbal), safety, inclusivity, & respect.
- Use de-escalation techniques and promote conflict resolution tools.
- Support students who may be less comfortable participating.
- Set end-of-recess routines that prep students to return to class, ready to learn
- Actively organize, lead & play age-appropriate games with students.
- Teach, reinforce, & clarify games to ensure that all rules are understood.
- Promote Junior Coach program to students, parents, & school staff.
- Recruit an effective and diverse cohort of 12-15 Junior Coaches.
- Coordinate Junior Coach training and recess shift schedules with Recess Manager.
- Prepare for Junior Coach Trainings in advance with lesson plans from Playworks Junior Coach curriculum.
- Check in with Junior Coaches at the beginning and end of every shift to provide encouragement, coaching, and feedback.
- Implement an incentive program that is visible, consistent, and up to date.
- Work environment: Able to stand and/or walk up to 75% of time. Could require running and expended periods of standing and walking. Able to sit up to 25% of the time. Able to view a computer monitor daily. Some travel may be required in company or personal vehicle. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times. This role is an on-site position and is not eligible for WFH or hybrid work.
- Employee required to possess a valid driver’s license and is occasionally required to transport members in a company vehicle.
- Proof of vehicle insurance is required.
- Mandatory to attain (within 6 months) and keep current CPR and first aid certifications.
Education and/or Experience
- High School diploma or GED is required as is experience working with youth, ages 6-18.
- One to three (1-3) years prior childcare experience is preferred.
- General knowledge of and experience working with at-risk populations is preferred.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary, as are excellent interpersonal skills with youth and management.
- Time management skills are required.
- Working knowledge of computers and systems is required, including and not limited to, Microsoft products such as Word (or similar product knowledge).
- High level of confidentiality and professionalism are required.
This position will work at a Muncie Community School (elementary) to provide structured recess programs and conflict resolution. This is in partnership with Playworks. Extensive training and development will be provided throughout the summer. Recess Coaches will also assist with gym and outdoor time throughout the summer as part of their development in preparation for the school-year program.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $13.00 - $15.00 per hour
Expected hours: 25 – 35 per week
