Clinical Psychology Practicum Student

The role of clinical psychology practicum student at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan involves psychological assessment, individual, group, and family therapy to child, adolescent, and adult patients. This position works within a community setting and within a multidisciplinary team. 

 

Key Duties/Responsibilities

  • Interviews clients and caregivers or family members to obtain medical, social, educational, and occupational history
  • In consultation with supervisor, prepares and selects psychological test forms appropriate for patient age, educational and cultural background.
  • Administers selected psychological tests according to standardized instructions in published test manuals and modifies administration procedure in accordance with patient's physical and/or mental limitations making note of such variations in administration procedures
  • Records, in writing, observations of patient's behavior during testing, especially such behaviors that influence validity of test administration, scoring, and interpretation
  • Undergoes supervision concerning test administration and scoring for each patient tested, with length and from of supervision consistent with rules determined by the State of Illinois
  • Acts in accordance with the American Psychological Association's Ethical Principles
  • Provide evidence-based therapeutic interventions with children, adolescents, and adults, included, but not limited to:  cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, parent management training, etc.
  • If not trained in the above types of therapy, be willing to learn new techniques through supervision.
  • Attend all trainings for students as assigned
  • Attend at least 1 hour of supervision per week and 1 hour of group supervision per week
  • Complete all documentation and notes within 48 hours of client contact
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team and in multiple settings

Relationships:

Internal: Maintains close, daily contact with Clubhouse Operations team to ensure integration of mental health services and supports into clubhouse programming is seamless and enhances daily operations. Maintains regular contact and collaboration with Youth Development Professionals and Youth Development Specialists regarding children and youth receiving counseling and mental health services.

 

External: Maintains contact with state licensing boards, external community groups and partners, schools, and service providers/vendors. Interacts daily with parents/caregivers seeking services as well as community-based service providers in order to ensure continuity of care.

Skills/Knowledge Required:

  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment when making decisions.
  • Great communication and interpersonal skills when dealing with a wide range of individuals (e.g., agency leadership, community partners, clinicians, students/interns, clubhouse staff, youth and families).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills when resolving youth issues and conflicts.
  • Familiarity with features of modern behavioral health EHRs.
  • Develops and maintains trust of clubhouse leadership and staff in order to facilitate integration of mental health services into clubhouse experience.

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology or related field from an accredited college or university
  • Current enrollment in a PhD or PsyD clinical psychology doctoral program
  • Temporary limited license psychologist

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand or walk for prolonged periods, and stoop and kneel occasionally.
  • Ability to speak and hear to use telephone, conduct meetings, etc.
  • Ability to effectively use computer, lift papers and files.
  • Ability to push, pull, reach for and lift articles up to 35 pounds at a time.
