2024 Summer Learning Program

Position: Elementary School Teacher (must be certified in RI at the elementary level). One position available for group of students in Grades 5, 6, 7 (approximately 22 students).

Location: Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence/Wanskuck Branch, 550 Branch Avenue, Providence RI.

Reports to: Summer Learning Program Manager and Summer Learning Program Instructional Coach

Dates: Training June 27-28, 2024. Program runs July 8 through August 16, 2024.

Payrate: $42.00/hour, 16-20 hours/week. This is a seasonal position.

Certified Elementary Teacher (RI certification) needed for a Summer Learning Program group that includes Grades 5, 6, 7 rising (approximately 22 students in the group). Content areas or specialties desired: K-5 English/Language Arts, K-5 Mathematics, K-5 Science/Technology

Program Summary and Goals:

In partnership with the Providence Public School Department, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence will conduct a 6-week Summer Learning Program at two of our branches this summer (South Side and Wanskuck). The goal of the program is to advance summer learning for approximately 200 students (rising grades 1-7). Summer Learning Program components include hands-on activities, age-appropriate learning experiences, and math and language arts instruction aligned with common core state standards. A Teacher Assistant from our current staff provides support for the Teacher in the classroom.

Job Responsibilities:

Accountability for Student Achievement

Administer pre- and post-tests.

Assess students’ understanding regularly with ambitious learning goals in mind, and take ownership of making necessary adjustments to instruction to reach goals.

Create and modify instructional lesson plans throughout the summer.

Provide meaningful and appropriate feedback.

Maintain progress reports and evaluation tools.

Communicating Content Knowledge

Demonstrate mastery of and enthusiasm for content area and the pedagogy it requires.

Connect students to content in creative and engaging ways that align to common core standards.

Facilitate activities that give students a sense of accomplishment that comes from mastering content area.

Use group management skills to engage all students in daily activities.

Equitable and Effective Instruction

Ability to blend Boys & Girls Clubs educational programming with outcomes-based supplemental learning activities that provide instruction in mathematics and/or reading.

Scaffold and differentiate instruction in order for all students to be prepared to do complex thinking and rigorous academic work for the next school year and grade level.

Create and follow instructional resources for use in the classroom .

Facilitate an active learning environment where every student participates and is valued as part of the Summer Learning Program community.

Create a positive educational climate in which students learn and thrive.

Create projects designed to enhance lesson plans.

Tutor students on a group and individual basis.

Professional Reflection and Collaboration

Work with Program Manager and Instructional Coach to ensure initiatives are being met.

Regularly reflect on practice, seek and respond to feedback and demonstrate self-awareness and commitment to continuous learning and development.

Seek to participate in and contribute to a collaborative learning community.

Attend weekly team meetings.

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Rhode Island Department of Education-Certified for Elementary Education

At least three years of teaching experience, preferably working in an urban, diverse setting

Successful experience working with diverse (English Language Learners and Special Education) populations

Comfortable with family engagement tools and strategies

Demonstrated content knowledge for subjects/levels taught

Knowledge and skills in culturally responsive teaching and learning

Exhibit fair and equitable classroom management skills

Ability to pass all background checks

Terms of Employment:

If a conditional offer is made, employment is contingent upon ability to pass employment screening/background checks.

Summer Learning Program training days are June 27-28, 2024; additional preparation time possible in early July.

Summer Learning Program Schedule:

June 27-28: Training Days (times TBD)

Program Starts July 8 and runs through August 16. Teachers work Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM (plus planning time and weekly team meetings); total of approximately 16 to 20 hours per week.

Rate of Pay: $42.00/hour.
