JOB DESCRIPTION- Social Worker: "Student, Family and School Liaison"
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Student, Family, and School Liaison is responsible for support and engagement activities at multiple school sites, including the planning, implementation, and coordination of district- and building-level responses to the needs of students and families in crisis. The Liaison will serve as a "case manager," partnering with teachers, school staff, students, families, union leadership, and community resources to develop relationships with students and families in need, supporting them in the individualized manner that is best suited to ensure the student’s success. The Liaison will provide on-going staff development for education staff on a wide array of topics and maintain their own staff development for continued learning in their professional field.
Reports to and evaluated by: Assistant Director, Teaching for Learning
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Offer rapid response when a family has requested assistance
- Listen and provide confidential emotional support, included during school meetings
- Help families with goal setting
- Communicate positively and regularly with teachers, administrators, and other staff including areas of growth, student progress, teacher expectations, developing a meaningful mentor collaboration between the staff and Liaison
- Work effectively on a crisis management team and provide effective leadership in school emergency and safety issues
- Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with staff, administrators, parents, support groups, governmental and community service agencies
- Provides school and educator consultations and presentations as requested
- Empower families to make informed choices that are right for them
- Identify families’ needs and strengths
- Provide peer support
- Role model and coach families how to identify and access the supports they need
- Refer families to community resources
- Help families understand the mental health evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment process
- Discuss options in an unbiased and culturally sensitive manner
- Explain processes, rights and responsibilities, and timelines for services
- Offer guidance with forms and paperwork
- Support transition, safety, and reentry planning
- Identify relevant benefits programs (e.g., Medicaid, SNAP); support enrollment as appropriate
- Provide topical training for families, school staff, and community organizations
- Engage in school or community outreach and awareness events
QUALIFICATIONS
- ESA in Social Work Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Social Sciences, Psychology, Social Work, or Human Services required
- Valid Washington State Driver's License
- Two years of experience in the school setting or in community services working with youth preferred.
- Successful experience in working with and collaborating with community agencies.
- Experience navigating systems on behalf of child, youth, or young adult with health challenges
- Experience working with families
- Familiarity with the resources in the community and region
- Strong interpersonal skills and empathy
- Understanding of and ability to maintain family confidentiality
- Familiarity and ability to work effectively with families of diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds
- Strong written and spoken communication skills
- Active involvement in other community councils, advisory boards, or parent and family groups
