POSITION OVERVIEW
Located along the Space Coast in Melbourne, Florida, the Brevard Zoo is an AZA-accredited facility with a diverse collection of over 900 animals representing nearly 200 species. It is also home to the Sea Turtle Healing Center for rehabilitation of wild marine turtles. Brevard Zoo is well-known for its strong conservation ethic and unique attractions, such as kayaking through the Africa area, giraffe feeding, and rhinoceros and various other animal encounters. The Brevard Zoo Human Resources Manager reports to the Director of Human Resources and is responsible for supporting the overall HR function including creating a respectful and inclusive culture of caring that encourages employees to do their best work, feel personally satisfied and reach their fullest potential. This position is critical in helping the institution grow through all HR initiatives including development of key HR programs, facilitation and training on critical skills and information pertinent to institution, creating relationships both internal and external Zoo stakeholders, enforcing the institution’s policies and practices, assisting with administering of payroll, benefits, and leaves, and other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND RELEVANT EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
REQUIRED:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Psychology, Sociology, or a related field.
- 2-3 years’ experience within HR or within a related field such as education or training.

- Supportive, welcoming and helpful attitude that embraces an ever-changing environment and a need to be flexible based on the needs of the department.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Collaborate with the Director of Human Resources in the development, execution, and iteration of HR programs & initiatives, including (but not limited to): orientation and onboarding, employee engagement, total compensation, diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion (DEAI), talent management, performance management and employee information systems management.
- Provide guidance, support and leadership to the Human Resources team of one(1) specialist and (1) coordinator.
- Develop, implement, and administer new HR programs and procedures based on industry changes and institutional needs.
- Participate in and/or oversee local payroll and HRIS responsibilities and processes, annual benefits enrollment, employee records management, and required audit and reporting responsibilities.
- Work with the HR Director in the preparation, participation and facilitation of various HR-led meetings, programs, and committees that seek the opinions and support of employees, including but not limited to the DEAI Committee, Employee Focus-Group Sessions and HR attendance at various staff and department meetings.
- Support the training needs of the staff by developing scheduling and/or training staff on HR related information and pertinent topics specific to their department or position.
- Assist in the development, implement and facilitation of new hire orientation, which provides new employees a strong insight into our culture, provides critical information required at the onset of employment, and incorporates departmental overviews for each area of the Zoo.
- Assist with the recruitment function by proactively building diverse and inclusive recruitment strategies to support our mission, developing relationships within the community to ensure we are actively pursuing a diverse pool of candidates for all employment opportunities, and screening/interviewing candidates for open positions.
- Assist in the management and processing of payroll, leave of absences, benefits administration, changes to employee status, changes to pay, changes to employee information.
- Represent the HR department and maintain the open-door policy by listening to employees and collaborating with the HR Director and leaders to act as needed.
- Be a resource for all employees and leaders regarding HR systems, policies, practices and initiatives.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Motivated self-starter with excellent verbal/written communication skills and a willingness to learn and “grow through doing” in all areas and aspects of the HR function.
- Excellent organizational and time management; ability to multitask in a busy environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suites (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
(L) Light work
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects. If the use of arm/leg controls require exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated as light work.
POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS/HAZARDS:
Indoor office environment most often with frequent movement outdoors. Exposure to extreme heat and weather conditions. Requires Sitting, Standing, Walking, Bending, Stooping, Kneeling, Finger Dexterity, Talking, Hearing, and Visual Acuity frequently.
WORK SCHEDULE:
May be required to work weekends and nights as necessary.
