Position Overview: The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to support diagnostic and therapeutic processes. - Perform venipuncture and other specimen collection techniques, ensuring proper patient identification and preparation.
- Handle, label, and process specimens in accordance with laboratory and regulatory guidelines (e.g., FDA, AABB, CAP).
- Operate diagnostic equipment and perform ancillary testing such as glucose tolerance tests and Point of Care Testing.
- Provide immediate care for patients experiencing adverse reactions during or after procedures.
- Maintain and organize supplies, monitor stock levels, and ensure equipment functionality.
- Educate patients about procedures and post-procedure care.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers to address patient care needs, including scheduling and clinical documentation.
- Adhere to infection control and biohazard disposal protocols.
- Support the training and oversight of phlebotomy personnel and students as needed.
- Participate in quality control, compliance audits, and policy updates.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent and completion of a certified phlebotomy training program accredited by NAACLS or equivalent.
- Certification: Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT-1) or equivalent by a Texas recognized agency such as ASCP or AMT.
- Experience: Minimum of one year in phlebotomy, with documented proficiency in venipuncture and specimen handling. Experience in a government healthcare setting preferred.
- Skills:
- Technical proficiency in specimen collection, labeling, and processing.
- Strong communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
- Computer literacy and experience with electronic medical records (EMR).
- Compliance: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; additional credentials may be required per specific contracts.
- Physical activity including standing, sitting, and walking for extended periods.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in compliance with safety standards.
