Phlebotomist

Position Overview: The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to support diagnostic and therapeutic processes. The role includes handling patients with professionalism, adhering to safety and regulatory standards, and maintaining the confidentiality of medical information. The position may require collaboration with healthcare teams and adherence to clinical protocols to ensure the highest quality of patient care.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform venipuncture and other specimen collection techniques, ensuring proper patient identification and preparation.
• Handle, label, and process specimens in accordance with laboratory and regulatory guidelines (e.g., FDA, AABB, CAP).
• Operate diagnostic equipment and perform ancillary testing such as glucose tolerance tests and Point of Care Testing.
• Provide immediate care for patients experiencing adverse reactions during or after procedures.
• Maintain and organize supplies, monitor stock levels, and ensure equipment functionality.
• Educate patients about procedures and post-procedure care.
• Collaborate with healthcare providers to address patient care needs, including scheduling and clinical documentation.
• Adhere to infection control and biohazard disposal protocols.
• Support the training and oversight of phlebotomy personnel and students as needed.
• Participate in quality control, compliance audits, and policy updates.

Qualifications:

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent and completion of a certified phlebotomy training program accredited by NAACLS or equivalent.
• Certification: Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT-1) or equivalent by a Texas recognized agency such as ASCP or AMT.
• Experience: Minimum of one year in phlebotomy, with documented proficiency in venipuncture and specimen handling. Experience in a government healthcare setting preferred.
• Skills:
• Technical proficiency in specimen collection, labeling, and processing.
• Strong communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
• Computer literacy and experience with electronic medical records (EMR).
• Compliance: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; additional credentials may be required per specific contracts.

Work Conditions:

• Physical activity including standing, sitting, and walking for extended periods.
• Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in compliance with safety standards.
• May require shifts covering various hours, including weekends and holidays.
