POSITION SUMMARY:
Provide direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes. Create a positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following, other duties may be assigned:
- Instruct swimming lessons in accordance with lesson plans and YMCA guidelines.
- Build effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helping to build the connection with the YMCA. Encourage parental involvement and identify potential volunteers.
- Share information on aquatics programming and subsequent schedules. As appropriate refer students and parents to other YMCA programs.
- Maintain accurate, complete and timely program records including but not limited to attendance sheets, progress reports and accident/incident forms.
- Understand, communicate and consistently apply all safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Report any unsafe conditions/equipment to supervisor immediately.
- Attend all staff meetings and in-service trainings.
Child Protection Responsibilities:
- Adheres to policies related to boundaries with youth.
- Participates in required abuse risk management training.
- Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
- Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
- Adheres to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least16 years of age.
- CPR, First Aid and AED for the Professional Rescuer Certifications as well as Emergency Oxygen.
- YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent.
- 2 years of previous lifeguarding experience; or equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
- Ability to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- Strong communication skills (verbal, written and interpersonal)
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions (exposure to outside weather is frequent if working at an outdoor pool). The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
