Job Summary:
The Optical Network Engineer is responsible for the design, support, and integration of the Bug Tussel fiber-optic backbone network. This role is also responsible for system and site engineering, as well as system updates, upgrades, and recommendations to improve the network.
Reports To: Director of Network Engineering
Duties / Responsibilities:
- Monitor request queue for new service requests and provide timely resolution to maintain defined SLAs
- SME for the optical network and its associated hardware, configurations, and overall design
- Perform proactive testing and troubleshooting of optical circuits with internal team members as well as 3rd party service providers
- Work with wholesale customers and vendors to resolve transport issues across the BTW DWDM backbone
- Maintain documentation, diagrams, and design information for the fiber network
- Participate in discussions regarding expansion and modification of the network to provide guidance and expertise
- Configure, maintain, and support DWDM hardware and software systems
- Work with technicians to deploy CPE devices to end-customers
- Work with others as a team to achieve operational goals
- Communicate with 3rd parties and internal operations on scheduled or unscheduled network maintenance events
- Collaborate with other Bug Tussel teammates for design and problem resolution
- Provide a seamless transition from provisioning to support for new and existing installations
- Adhere to Bug Tussel security standards when configuring and maintaining equipment
- Occasionally visit site locations to deliver equipment, assist in troubleshooting, turn up service, or gain knowledge of the site
- Coordinate support tickets and warranty claims with 3rd party hardware vendors
- Other duties as assigned
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to read, write, and understand English

- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Knowledge of fiber optic networks design and structure including DWDM
- Understands complex circuit design or configuration of command line operation for IP, CPE, broadband and Ethernet services and related devices
- Ability to troubleshoot new or unique issues
- Ability to adapt to new and changing situations
- Valid state-issued driver’s license
Education and Experience:
- 2 year degree in networking-related field recommended
- 2 years’ experience in telecommunications with an emphasis on fiber strongly preferred
- Relevant industry certifications or equivalent work experience preferred
- Cisco CCNA, Ciena CRS, Nokia NRS, Juniper JNCIA are a plus
- Experience working in a Microsoft Windows-based environment
