Heavy Equipment Operator I (Open Positions: 1)

Under the supervision of the Road or Landfill Supervisor, the Heavy Equipment Operator I performs skilled work in operating different types of construction and maintenance operations, or landfill operations. The employee in this position operates a variety of heavy equipment requiring a great degree of skill in performing a variety of job assignments. This employee performs tasks related to road, bridge maintenance and construction or landfill operations.

• Operates heavy equipment such as a dump truck, track hoe, back hoe, motor grader, broom, roller, oil distributor, scraper, compactor and other heavy equipment to rebuild roads, bridges, or dispose of waste at the landfill;

Breaks up asphalt on roads needing repair or replacement;

Patches road and bridge surfaces using cold or hot mix;

Performs finished grading operations;

Spreads dirt, cover, gravel, sand, rock and asphalt, haul material and supplies to job sites;

Performs snow removal and ice removal;

Assists with fence building, bridge repairs, paint striping;

Performs bridge maintenance work such as mowing road ditches, installing and maintaining culverts, filling washouts and installing guardrail, cutting brush, tree trimming and removing debris, chipping brush;

Follows safety rules;

Performs light maintenance and servicing of work in connection with the operation of related equipment, perform daily inspection of equipment;

Cleans or lubricates vehicles, machinery, equipment, instruments, tools, work areas, and other objects, using hand tools, power tools, and cleaning equipment;

Performs unskilled manual work as assigned;

Uses tools ranging from common hand and power tools, such as hammers, hoists, saws, chainsaws, drills, weed eaters, wrenches, shovels and rakes;

Uses uniform traffic manual guidelines to install signage, repair signage;

Sets out signs and cones around work areas to divert traffic, flags motorists to warn them of obstacles or repair work ahead, performs work according to work zone safety guidelines;

Operates heavy equipment while paying close attention to public traffic, conditions, drivers;

Sorts and segregates waste such as wood, brush, construction debris, rock;

Performs other duties as deemed necessary or as required.

Heavy Equipment Operator - I

• Ability to operator a motor grader, tractor and roller, loader, dozer, backhoe and other heavy and light construction and road maintenance equipment;

Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties;

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals;

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence;

Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization;

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume;

Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry;

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form;

Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations;

Ability to convey and receive detailed or important instructions and information to and from other workers and the general public;

Knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to the safe and efficient operations of related equipment;

Knowledge of road and bridge materials and equipment and equipment maintenance;

Knowledge of techniques and materials used in road and bridge construction and repair.
