Job Summary
A clinical rehabilitation counselor is a mental health professional who specializes in working with individuals with physical, mental, or developmental disabilities, focusing on helping them manage the psychological and social impacts of their disability to achieve optimal functioning in their personal, vocational, and daily living spheres, often through individual and group therapy, case management, and advocacy efforts.
Responsibilities
- Assessment and diagnosis: Conducting comprehensive evaluations to understand the client's disability, psychological needs, and functional limitations.
- Individual therapy: Providing counseling services to address emotional challenges related to disability, such as grief, depression, anxiety, and self-esteem issues.
- Group therapy: Facilitating group sessions for individuals with similar challenges to promote peer support, coping skills development, and social interaction.
- Vocational rehabilitation: Assisting clients in identifying career goals, developing job readiness skills, and accessing employment opportunities.
- Case management: Coordinating services with other healthcare providers, community agencies, and support systems to ensure clients receive comprehensive care.
- Independent living skills training: Teaching clients strategies for managing daily activities and promoting autonomy in their living environment.
- Advocacy: Representing clients' needs to insurance companies, employers, and government agencies to access necessary benefits and accommodations.
- Education and outreach: Providing information and support to individuals, families, and communities regarding disability awareness and access to services
Qualifications
- Master's degree in Counseling or related field
- Licensure as a Professional Counselor or equivalent
- Proficiency in behavioral therapy and applied behavior analysis
- Strong patient assessment and care skills
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and medical documentation
- Experience in crisis intervention and mental health counseling
- Familiarity with cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing
- Experience working with children and individuals with developmental disabilities
