CALHOUN COUNTY is Hiring a Social Worker Near Battle Creek, MI

The candidate will work collaboratively with the Social Work Coordinator and Assistant Public Defenders to assist clients in the areas of housing, substance abuse, mental health, employment and other services as part of holistic, client-centered representation. The qualified candidate for this position may also be expected to provide support for Assistant Public Defenders by advocating for treatment, reduced sentences and/or alternatives to incarceration.

  1. Attends collaborative meetings with the client and attorney, reviews case service plans and assists clients to engage with local social service agencies. Serves as a liaison to local social service agencies in collaboration with the Social Work Coordinator.
  2. Makes appropriate referrals to address clients’ needs (drug treatment, mental health treatment, housing, and other benefits) and advocates on their behalf.
  3. Gathers factual mitigation information through interviews, records and other documents. This may include assisting and screening clients at arraignments.
  4. Conducts research and prepares alternatives to incarceration memoranda for submission to judges and prosecutors through assistant public defenders.
  5. May accompany clients to court as requested by the attorney.
  6. Prior to court proceedings, maintains and documents ongoing updates regarding the client’s progress, through communication with the client, service providers, and others.
  7. Completes special projects and other duties as directed.
  8. Stays abreast of developments in the field, participates in professional groups, engages in continuing professional education and assists the Public Defender with new ideas and initiatives.
  9. Performs other duties as required.
  1. A bachelor’s degree in social work or other human service field.
  2. At least some knowledge of the family and criminal legal system with a commitment to client-centered, zealous advocacy.
  3. Demonstrated ability to assess needs with the diverse populations involved in the criminal and family legal system in a culturally sensitive and respectful manner.
  4. Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  5. Ability to work compassionately and respectfully with clients in crisis.
  6. Computer skills necessary to effectively utilize word processing, database, spreadsheet, and presentation software applications. Ability to use the Internet and e-mail.
  7. Possess a valid Michigan vehicle operator’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  8. Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to work with a diverse group of county personnel and citizens.
  9. Excellent oral, and written communication skills.
  10. Reasoning skills needed to define and solve problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  11. Ability to simultaneously handle multiple projects requiring concentration and attention to detail with frequent disruptions.
  12. Willingness to access clients and witnesses in correctional facilities.
  13. Ability to advocate on behalf of clients in court, if needed.
  14. Professionalism is an absolute necessity, along with the ability to appropriately handle confidential information and sensitive situations.
