What are the responsibilities and job description for the RN, Unit Manager (7:30am-8:00pm) position at Canton Christian Home, Inc?
Job Title: Unit Manager/Shift Supervisor (7:30am-8:00pm-Every other weekend/holiday required)
Department: Nursing
Supervisor: Asst. Director of Nursing or Director of Nursing
Personal Specifications: Must be a licensed Registered Nurse with a valid and current license in the State of Ohio. Must be able to make decisions, deal tactfully with personnel, Residents, Families, visitors and others. Must be able to critically think in most situations to afford the greatest outcomes. Must be willing to make frequent changes to own schedule throughout the shift to accommodate the daily working of the facility. Must be able to communicate openly and professionally. Must carry yourself in a manner that empowers and promotes a good working relationship with all team members.
Supervisory Responsibilities: (including but not limited to the following responsibilities)
1. Spend a minimum of 75-90 % of working hours out on the unit floor.
2. Make rounds with doctors who come in on their shift and communicate to the charge nurse any new orders.
3. Note any concerns of policy/procedure or regulatory breakdown and address accordingly.
4. Contact physicians, families and significant others regarding condition changes.
5. Assist the charge nurses in completion of their work or in situations in which another person can be used to make phone calls, etc. (i.e. Transport to the hospital, death, etc.)
6. Educate team as needed in areas of poor performance, lack of knowledge or new procedure that the team does not generally handle. New educational areas will be approved through the DON/ADON before teachings begin.
7. Direct nurses and nurse aides alike in the successful completion of their job duties. Be knowledgeable of the job description for each position. Intercede when there is a confrontation between staff or staff and Residents, families, departments other than nursing. Handle any disciplinary problems which occur on your shift. Counsel the staff. If the infraction is serious enough, the Supervisor has the right to ask the person involved to clock out and leave the premises. Instruct the staff to call the Director of Nursing the next day the D.O.N. is scheduled to work.
8. Participate in verbal report or huddles at both the beginning and the end of the shift.
9. Plan, organize and carry out educational sessions on topics/areas of DON approval in a formal setting with a variety of teaching methods built into the presentation prior to the meeting.
10. Try to replace call off’s if the scheduler is not in house at the time of the call off.
11. Fill in for charge nurse if unable to be replaced.
12. Be involved in evaluation of staff on the shift as requested.
13. Act as a “liaison” between nursing and the other departments within the Home:
- Housekeeping
- Maintenance
- Dietary
- Social Service
- Laundry
- Administration
(If not resolved immediately, refer to the Director of Nursing)
15. Be an active participant on the unit with resident care. This could be assisting with feeding/toileting/transporting etc.
16. Spend time with several different resident weekly to assure their care and needs are being meet timely, professionally and within current practice guidelines. Reporting any concerns to the proper Department Head as well as the DON.
17. Assist in building a strong cohesive nursing team.
18. Review documentation of both nurses and STNA’s for accuracy and content. Addressing concerns for improvement as indicated.
19. Will work towards educating self on State and Federal regulations, and how best to achieve these goals. Will offer feedback to DON/ADON to improve processes.
20. Attend meetings/planning sessions as directed
21. This is not an all-inclusive list. At times the shift supervisor may be asked to complete other duties.
22. Oversees the expiration of medications in medication carts and medication rooms.
