Position Description

DEFINITION:
The Career Academy High School Liaison will serve as the key point of contact between Cape Fear Community College (CFCC), New Hanover County Schools, and Pender County Schools to support students who participated in CFCC’s Career Academies in middle school and are now enrolled in high school. The Liaison will support, guide, and mentor students with career planning and recruit students to participate in the Career and College Promise Program and post-secondary opportunities at CFCC. The Liaison will document and monitor the progress of students and partner with high schools to track student outcomes. The Career Academy High School Liaison, while on any school campus, will follow local board of education rules and will be subject to the authority of the school building administration. Requires day and evening hours and some travel; college committee assignments; professional development; and other activities. The position is grant-funded and subject to the availability of funds.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:


  • Receives general supervision from the Career Academy Coordinator
  • Will receive direction and guidance from high school administrators and CTE staff.
  • Exercises no supervision.

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

Essential Functions:

Career Exploration & Case Management

  • Support outreach efforts involving high school learners to raise career awareness of opportunities.
  • Motivate students to participate in career exploration and CCP pathways.
  • Support students’ efforts for career pathways exploration.
  • Coordinate events designed to promote awareness of career pathways for students and parents.
  • Work with school/college personnel to prepare information related to career pathways for distribution to students and parents.
  • Follow a communication plan to ensure consistent communication with students, faculty, staff, parents, etc.
  • Develop personalized support plans, including tutoring and mentoring, to ensure students’ academic success and positive career outcomes.
  • Organize college campus/industry tours.
  • Maintain accurate and adequate confidential student records.
  • Be knowledgeable of CFCC programs, including Career and Technical Education (CTE) and short-term workforce training programs.
  • Conduct intentional outreach to students to keep them connected to CFCC, enrolled in CCP pathways, and provide support in career planning and academic advising.

Career Academies
  • Assist Career Academy Coordinator in planning a two-week career and college exploratory summer camp;
  • Work with CFCC faculty and staff to coordinate the summer camp and visits to various programs;
  • Hold information sessions for parents and students regarding summer camps.
  • Direct and analyze evaluation of Academy success. Use results to improve the student experience.

Other Important Functions:
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability To:
  • Provide support, engagement, and guidance to help high school students define their career interests and explore educational opportunities at Cape Fear Community College.
  • Improve the quality and effectiveness of career exploration for high school students and their families.
  • Motivate and inspire career exploration.
  • Plan, design, and deliver content for career development workshops and sessions.
  • Coordinate day-to-day operations by scheduling: activities, programs and speakers.
  • Conduct workshops and sessions for students that focus on careers and educational opportunities in high school through the College and Career Promise program.
  • Provide information on careers, career pathways, and educational requirements.
  • Provide opportunities for job shadowing, mentoring, internships, visits to business and industry, and other career awareness activities.
  • Monitor and track student career interest areas and the job market.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of activities and students served.
  • Track Career Academy participants throughout high school to capture college enrollment and career placement.
  • Contact, schedule and arrange guest speakers from the local business community and CFCC.
  • Create partnerships and interact with a variety of external workforce development stakeholders including alumni, business and industry, governmental agencies, etc.
  • Provide enhanced career services counseling for underrepresented and first-generation college students.
  • Inform students, teachers, counselors, and parents regarding local and regional workforce needs.
  • Facilitate tours of Cape Fear Community College Campuses.
  • Work independently.
  • Make sound decisions and use good judgment.
  • Assist in the development of policies, procedures, and systems, which ensure productive and efficient operation of the Department.
  • Represents the College in a positive and professional manner and collaborates with academic and Student Services units to contribute to the retention of students.
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

    • Handling varied tasks simultaneously
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following:

    • Bending, stooping, climbing, or lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Maintain mental capacity, which allow the capability of:
    • Making sound decisions

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:


Minimum Education/Training:

An associate’s degree in an applicable program of study. Or, technical training and work experience that would be applicable and equal to a 2-year degree.


Minimum Experience
:

  • Two years responsible experience in middle school, high school or education setting.
  • Experience with or demonstrated knowledge of career services.
  • Experience with one-on-one student mentoring, tutoring or advising.
  • Experience in working with students from diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Experience in maintain records and reporting.
Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills: (In addition to the required minimum experience)
  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field.
  • Two (2) years of teaching experience either at a middle or high school.

  • Successful candidates who have obtained their education outside of the US and its territories must have their academic degree(s) validated, at their own expense, by an outside credential evaluation service as equivalent to the Baccalaureate or Master’s degree conferred by a regionally accredited college or university in the United States.
