Cape Henry Collegiate is Hiring an Associate Director of College Counseling Near Virginia, VA

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Cape Henry Collegiate is seeking applications for a full time Associate Director of College Counseling to begin in the fall of 2023. While the ideal candidate would start in August, the potential to begin later in the semester would be considered for the right candidate.

The Upper School is searching for a collaborative, flexible, and dedicated person who is committed to supporting each student and family’s individual path and goals. This person should enjoy working on a team and be willing to develop relationships throughout our community. A successful candidate will cultivate a student-centered approach that focuses first and foremost on helping students discover who they are and what makes them unique. The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of the current college admissions landscape and be familiar with admissions processes at schools across the country and abroad so that students are supported in creating college lists that align with their abilities, talents, personality, educational needs, and financial ability.

Position Duties:

  • The Associate Director of College Counseling, in conjunction with the Director of College Counseling, is responsible for administering all aspects of the college counseling program.
  • Working closely with students and their families, the Associate Director will engage in individual and family college counseling as well as formal presentations to a variety of constituents. While the majority of responsibilities fall during the academic year, some days in the summer are expected for rising senior programs.
  • The Associate Director will have a comprehensive understanding about colleges’ academic programs, admissions, and financial aid processes and will be open to continuously learning about these dynamic aspects of higher education. He/she will likewise understand the mission and student body of Cape Henry and communicate these characteristics through cultivated relationships with admissions representatives.
  • The ideal candidate will possess strong oral and written communication skills and display confidence and comfort in public speaking and the use of technology. They will demonstrate a commitment to inclusion in their daily practice and in building relationships with members of the Cape Henry community.
  • The Associate Director will work closely with a diverse group of coaches, teachers, advisors, parents, and other constituents to form a team of support for Cape Henry students.
  • The Associate Director will serve as a member of the Upper School Leadership Team.

Education and Experience

  • Ideal candidates will have advanced degree(s) in their fields; firsthand experience in selective college admissions and/or secondary-school college counseling; an interest in and capacity for coordinated work with adolescents, families, colleagues within the School, and professional peers outside the School; and possess strong skills in organization and written and verbal communication.
  • The Associate Director is a 10-month position that reports to the Director of College Counseling. The two counselors share a caseload of approximately 90-100 students per grade and are supported by a full-time Administrative Assistant.
