Cape Henry Collegiate is Hiring a Technical Director Near Virginia, VA

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

We are seeking a highly skilled and visionary person for this inaugural position. Within our new, 50,000 square foot state-of-the-art Center for Innovation and Performing Arts (opening spring of 2024), this person will help to manage the new 450 seat Kramer Theater and will manage fully the new Fabrication Lab.

The Technical Director will coordinate all audio, video, lighting, and rigging for events in the new Kramer Theater while also teaching students how to operate these systems. The person will also manage the new Fabrication Lab where students will be able to build with wood, metal and plastic. The person will focus on supporting engineering, robotics and theater students with building/fabrication. The person will also help students and staff in all three divisions (Lower School, Middle School and Upper School) to imagine new, innovative projects using design and fabrication.

The Technical Director will teach or co-teach a reduced course load to support students who aspire to deepen their skills in the technical aspects of performing arts, engineering, etc.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with all departments, and especially with our Performing Arts and STEAM departments to ensure quality programming in all shared event spaces on campus.
  • Oversee the use and maintenance of all technical equipment, including lighting, sound and video systems along with the motorized rigging equipment in the theater fly space in the Kramer Theater.
  • Oversee set construction for performances.
  • Manage the new Fabrication Lab and encourage its use among students and faculty.
  • Develop and maintain a safe working environment for students, staff, and performers, ensuring compliance with all safety regulations and procedures.
  • Train, manage and support students in the use of technical equipment and tools, as well as performance production techniques.
  • Maintain inventory of technical equipment and supplies, ensuring availability for all productions.
  • Teach and/or co-teach a reduced course load of technical theater classes and/or other courses that use the Fabrication Lab.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures related to theater production with emphasis on building and motorized rigging systems.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.

Requirements: Successful candidates with have a bachelor's degree in theater production or a related field and experience in technical theater, including experience with lighting and sound design, rigging, set design, and construction. Experience working in a K-12 school setting or experience working with students in an educational setting is preferred.
