What are the responsibilities and job description for the Upper School Theater Teacher & Director position at Cape Henry Collegiate?
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Cape Henry Collegiate seeks a dynamic and experienced Theater Teacher and Director to join our school community in August 2023. This person will be joining our community just as we prepare to open the brand new, 50,000 square foot Clarke Ervin Center for Innovation and the Performing Arts (spring 2024). The ideal candidate will be responsible for teaching theater classes, directing the Middle School and Upper School productions, and helping to manage the new 450 seat Kramer Family Theater. In addition to the core responsibilities, the theater teacher will be expected to bring innovative ideas to the classroom and productions, constantly striving to create new and exciting experiences for students. They should have a passion for creating and maintaining a diverse and inclusive environment within the theater program, ensuring that all students feel valued and supported. The teacher will also be expected to connect with the wider community, collaborating with local organizations to showcase the work of our theater program while also helping to manage a theater space that will be used by outside organizations.
Responsibilities include:
- Continue to develop and implement engaging curriculum for theater classes in grades 6-12.
- Teach theater classes in the Middle and Upper School.
- Direct and produce four productions (two plays and two musicals) per academic year. Equivalent alternate productions can be considered.
- Collaborate with a technical director and other staff.
- Assist in managing the Kramer Family Theater and related back of house spaces.
- Attend and participate in school-wide events, including parent-teacher conferences, faculty meetings, additional designated duties, and community activities.
- Create ways to bring our theater program and students out into the community.
- Foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for all students.
- Work closely with other performing arts teachers and the administration to support and promote the performing arts program.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong passion for working with students.
- Enthusiasm for, and knowledge of, directing and producing theater productions.
- Experience in stage management, set design, costuming, audio, and lighting. A technical director will work closely with the director.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff.
Requirements: Successful candidates will have a bachelor’s degree in theater, English, or a related field, master’s degree and at least three years of teaching experience are preferred. Experience working in theater or directing (in schools or outside) is expected.
