Job Summary | The Safety Manager leads site safety initiatives to ensure compliance with corporate and subsidiary safety standards. This role involves executing safety directives, enhancing safety performance, and ensuring that facility safety policies and procedures align with government regulations. The manager is responsible for developing plant safety and health programs and coordinating safety training initiatives. Additionally, they foster a work environment that promotes a proactive and positive safety culture.
Essential Functions |
- Adhere to all company policies, procedures, safety practices and guidelines
- Manage and lead a team of employees while fostering a culture of integrity, respect, and adherence to Cardinal values
- Lead and coach those involved in safety incident investigations to determine root causes and install preventive measures
- Conduct safety audits to ensure compliance with safety regulations
- Inspect facility, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and address potential hazards
- Develop safety procedures and policies to maintain compliance and employee safety
- Provide trend analysis of safety data to identify key drivers to improve behavior-based safety performance
- Conduct Job Hazard Analysis, PPE Hazard Analysis, Ergonomic Assessments, Risk Analysis and implement improvements
- Oversee plant safety inventory, plant environment, and employee testing
- Help implement continual improvement efforts identified by external consultants
- Monitor safety issues and hazards on the floor and ensure prompt follow-up for timely resolutions
- Maintain and enter information into SDS software, corrective action notices and incidents into Velocity
- Create meeting agendas for various committees and direct safety team meetings
- Oversee documentation and records of various meeting minutes as well as ongoing follow-up
- Review physical demand job functions for changes and coordinate with an external consultant
- Manage workers’ compensation claims, attend injured workers’ appointments to include on and offsite case management
- Coordinate monthly safety meetings and provide periodic general industry safety training for all shifts
- Facilitate monthly plant wide meetings to include safety directives, divisional plant incidents and safety topics
- Create internal Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) opportunities
- Support new hire pre-employment and safety orientation training for new employees
- Evaluate the effectiveness of both classroom and online safety training programs
- Oversee data entry in various programs and software (e.g. Velocity, Cornerstone, SDS, Scorecard, MS Office)
- Support the following initiatives/projects: VPP, Contractor Safety Management, JHA, and Industrial First Aid Treatment
- Recognize effective practices and spearhead ongoing improvement initiatives to minimize work process risks
- Enhance safety awareness and implement safe work practices
- Provide guidance to management and employees on safety initiatives
- Participation in Regional & National VPP Participants Association and Leadership meetings and training as assigned
- Participate in IG company incident review calls, Quarterly safety meetings and other related meetings and/or committees
Education, Certifications & Experience |
- Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health, Industrial Technology or related field required
- A minimum of five years of experience in occupational health and safety within an industrial setting is required
- SMS, GSP, ASP, or CSP credentialing through the BCSP required
- First Aid/CPR/AED or EMR Certification preferred
- OSHA 10/30 Hour General Industry Outreach Trainer preferred
- Special Government Employee (SGE) within VPP program or willing to obtain

- Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations regarding OSHA
- Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word & PowerPoint
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
Workplace Environment |
- This role entails spending 30-40% of the time on the production floor, with the rest of the time dedicated to office work
- This position will require flexibility to adapt to various shift hours, and open availability any day of the week
- The role involves working more than 40 hours per week, which may include occasional weekends
- Onsite with occasional travel required (5-10% annually)
- Noise levels can be high and will vary based on the location in the plant
