The Opportunity:

Carolina Friends School (CFS) seeks an Upper School Social Studies Teacher and Advisor to join our staff for the 2025-2026 school year. The teacher will join an Upper School team committed to continually developing a rigorous, student-centered, and mission-driven curriculum. The teaching for this position will be centered on social studies, but opportunities exist to teach electives in other areas, as determined by the school’s needs and the teacher’s areas of expertise and interest.

CFS offers teachers an opportunity to engage with students in and out of the classroom and utilizes a narrative-based approach to student evaluation instead of letter or number grades. Teachers at CFS enjoy a school community committed to a pedagogy rooted in Quaker thought and practice. We strive to collaborate toward the realization of every child’s highest potential in the classroom, community, and wider world.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Teach at least three sections (approximately 12-15 students per section) of the core 9th-grade social studies course and two electives
  • Lead an advisee group of approximately 10 students, which includes:
  • Supporting advisees’ intellectual, social, and emotional well-being by serving as their primary advocate
  • Maintaining frequent contact with advisees and continually monitoring their progress and development
  • Providing individualized support to advisees and their families, as well as fostering a safe, inclusive environment for their advisory group as a whole
  • Participate in at least one all-school committee after the first year of employment and, for the first two years of employment, an extensive staff orientation and mentoring program
  • Participate in the Upper School’s End of Year program, which in many cases requires travel

Strong Candidate will:

  • Have experience teaching social studies at the high school level and a rich repertoire of teaching strategies to engage a variety of learning styles
  • Have a bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to teaching high school social studies
  • Demonstrate a love for adolescents and an understanding of their intellectual, social, and emotional needs
  • Demonstrates success in mentoring and supporting teenagers in a wide variety of ways and contexts, demonstrating an understanding of the primacy of relationships in teaching adolescents
  • Demonstrating success in collaborating on curriculum development with colleagues within and outside of the department
  • Be willing to understand how power and inequality, influenced by factors such as race, class, gender, sexuality, and learning and physical disabilities, impact our students, families, and colleagues
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and strong affinity for Quaker philosophy and the School’s mission
  • Employ technology in a variety of ways in the classroom, including utilizing a Learning Management System
  • Possess a commitment to continuous professional growth and an enthusiasm for learning in the community
  • Possess strong communication skills, along with a willingness to work flexibly and collaboratively with colleagues
  • Demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills
