Overview:
The Oiler is responsible for the routine maintenance and operation of mechanical systems on a barge, including engines, pumps, and other equipment. This position ensures the barge operates efficiently and safely, contributing to the overall success of maritime operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Equipment Maintenance:
- Lubricate and oil engines, pumps, and other mechanical equipment as needed.
- Assist with routine maintenance tasks including cleaning, tightening, and inspecting machinery.
- Monitor fluid levels and top off oil, fuel, and water as required.
System Monitoring:
- Regularly check the performance of engines, generators, pumps, and compressors.
- Report any irregularities or potential malfunctions to the Chief Engineer or Deck Engineer.
- Record maintenance activities and log equipment performance.
Repairs:
- Assist in troubleshooting and repairing minor mechanical issues.
- Support engineers in overhauls or extensive repair tasks.
Safety and Compliance:
- Ensure all maintenance tasks are performed in compliance with safety regulations and protocols.
- Maintain cleanliness in the engine room and other work areas to minimize safety hazards.
- Participate in safety drills and follow emergency procedures when necessary.
General Assistance:
- Assist the engineering team with operational tasks as needed.
- Communicate effectively with the crew and follow directives to maintain efficient barge operations.
Qualifications:
- Basic knowledge of marine engines and mechanical systems.
- Experience with oiling and lubricating machinery, preferably in a maritime setting.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and at sea for extended periods.
- Basic understanding of safety regulations and mechanical systems.
- STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) certification may be required.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift heavy objects, climb ladders, and work in challenging environments.
- Willingness to work in various weather conditions and in isolated locations.
Skills:
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to follow instructions and work well with others.
- Basic troubleshooting and mechanical repair skills.
Working Conditions:
Work is primarily conducted on a barge in maritime environments, which can include rough weather, isolation, and long periods away from home. This is a physically demanding role requiring attention to detail and a high level of responsibility.
