The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, MD is seeking candidates to fill the position of High School Counselor for the 2025-2026 academic year. The counselor oversees the emotional, social, and behavioral health and well-being of individual students in the High School and reports to the Dean of Students.  

 

The ideal candidate appreciates and respects high school-aged students through challenging and joyful moments alike. The counselor collaborates and communicates clearly with a broad range of constituents, including students, parents, colleagues, mental health providers, and partner organizations. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong organizational and time management skills and shows initiative, flexibility and follow through.

 

The High School Counselor is part of the Health and Wellness Center team which promotes social-emotional growth and wellbeing by implementing a holistic wellness curriculum to serve all students. The Center fosters a proactive culture of wellness in which all students can thrive.   

 

Pay is commensurate with education and experience, and is calculated according to a school-wide pay scale. This position is eligible for benefits.

 Responsibilities: 

  • Provide support to students during times of transition, heightened stress, critical change or other situations impeding student success 
  • Communicate effectively with parents, teachers, learning specialists, ESOL specialists, outside professionals and administration regarding strategies to assist students
  • Recognize and respond to student mental health needs and assist students and families seeking resources and outside mental health support
  • Assist students in developing advocacy and problem solving skills as they navigate high school
  • Serve as a student advisor 
  • Maintain accurate, detailed records
  • Serve as a member of the Student Review Team
  • Serve as a member of the Health and Wellness Center team
  • Other duties as assigned by the High School Principal

 

Qualifications


  • Masters Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or related mental health field required
  • Preferred minimum of three years of related professional experience working with students
  • Fluency with technology
