What are the responsibilities and job description for the Gear Up Tutor position at Chautauqua Striders, Inc.?
Schedule: Part-Time, 10-month, 4-6 hours/week
Shift: 3-5 days/week during the school day
Scope of Responsibility:
The Gear Up Tutor will facilitate tutoring and homework help for the cohort of 9th grade students who attend Dunkirk High School, with a specific focus on boosting reading and math skills.
Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting students with homework assignments, comprehension of math skills and/or reading and helping prepare students for exams
- Providing a safe, supportive, structured, and positive environment for students to learn and grow
- Connecting regularly with teachers and building positive working relationships within Dunkirk High School
- Developing and leading students in enrichment activities
- Working to make sure program rules are applied consistently and fairly
- Documenting student participation, attendance and progress
- Developing trust and respect with the student body
- Collaborating with GEAR UP Project Director to tailor program as needed
Qualifications:
Previous teaching experience or currently pursuing a degree in teaching
Experience tutoring Math and/or ELA at 9th grade level preferred
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Ability to motivate and encourage students to improve their academic performance using goal-setting strategies
Creativity, flexibility, patience and ability to individualize teaching tactics to meet student needs
Excellent organizational skills, sound judgment, and ability to work with diverse individuals and groups
Basic computer skills
Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and insurance
