Senior Electrical and Instrumentation Designer Job Description
As a Senior Electrical and Instrumentation Designer you are to perform design related work on all projects assigned by the supervisor including, but not limited to field work, layout, design, drafting, bill of materials, transmittals, design packages, and other duties as required. You will act as an information liaison to clients, supervisors, designers, drafters, and other Chemic departments, and will provide training to designers, drafters, and junior employees.
Job Responsibilities
Assist supervisor in completion of design estimate package
Procure data, specifications and related existing drawings to use on assigned projects
Maintain field notes and field information in usable and retrievable form
Provide layout and design as well as board and CAD drafting. Provide supervisor with suggested design or presentation
Review drawings for completeness and arrange for checking of drawings. Perform checking on other projects
Complete bill of material and client transmittals, organize client design packages, and perform other duties as required for the project work
Assist design group leaders and project engineers by performing work within estimated man-hours
Provide field follow-up on projects
Provide support and communication to project members
Train other designers, drafters, and junior employees
Interface with clients and other Chemic disciplines to answer questions, resolve conflicts, and complete assignments
Instrumentation Responsibilities
Assist with selection, sizing and specification of all types of instruments and valves used in flow, pressure, temperature, level and other applications
Development of instrumentation system drawings such as loop sheets, I/O lists, controls interconnection drawings, location plan drawings, etc.
Specification and design of PLC and DCS based control systems
Development of Hazardous Location assessments and drawings
Evaluate P&IDs for proper instrumentation symbology and control philosophies
Experience in executing front-end studies and detailed project execution
Experience with Delta V, Allen Bradley, and Modicon control systems
Experience with SIS (Safety Instrumented Systems) design is a plus
Electrical Responsibilities
Develop common electrical design and drawings including single lines, motor schematic drawings and motor controls (including VFD’s), electrical connection drawings and grounding systems, cable tray systems, underground conduit routing, area classification, cable schedules and develop bill of materials for electrical consumables
Develop power and lighting distribution panel specifications and supporting distribution design (with area lighting design)
Ability to perform all calculations associated with instrument cable selection, conductor sizing, voltage drop, conduit fill, cable tray fill and other common electrical design requirements
Skilled in reading, interpreting and using vendor prints and drawings
Ability to interpret technical work to less experienced designers and drafters
Knowledge of NEC, NFPA, and API codes and regulations
Obtain bids and equipment specifications from vendors
Ability to perform field survey and complete job proposal and man hour estimates
Job Qualifications
Competent computer skills in all major software, including Excel and Power Point
Good communication skills (verbal, written and presentation)
Proficient in using all major engineering technological tools applicable to practicing discipline
Education/Experience
Must have AutoCAD experience and/or a certificate
10 years field experience in petrochemical/chemical plants and refineries and 4 years engineering design experience
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Approximately 70% office work and 30% work in the plants and field. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb (at least one flight of stairs) and sit for extended periods of time. Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
