Quality Control Manager
Job Summary:
Responsible for managing quality control department. Will provide oversight and assist with the development and implementation of programs, processes, and procedures within Quality Assurance, QC Laboratory, Food Safety, Sanitation, and Regulatory. Will manage the process of inspecting during process prior to outgoing and will work closely with Plant Management to maintain Company compliance and protect food safety.
Responsibilities:
- Support operations by monitoring all phases of production to ensure quality, accuracy, and sanitation of products, as well as the documentation and maintenance of required quality logs and records.
- Manage and lead all aspects of the quality department and provide support for Regulatory to ensure customers are provided with proper services, testing, samples, and regulatory information.
- Ensure Company compliance with food safety policies, sanitation, and quality procedures within the lab and plant, HACCP, FSMA, GMP, and other auditing body requirements, through training, auditing, verifying, monitoring, documenting processes, and policy writing, as well as direct employee enforcement in all locations.
- Will provide support, and may participate in, Food Safety and GMP audits (BRC, regulatory FDA, customer, etc.)
- Ensure appropriate oversight for the process of inspecting during process and prior to all outgoing orders to assure quality, accuracy, and sanitation of products, as well as the documentation and maintenance of required Quality logs and records.
- Investigate, provide input, and make recommendations to improve current plant procedures.
- Assist operations by auditing, reporting, and following up in regard to quality/food safety maintenance and sanitation.
- Monitor sanitation and the master cleaning schedule and follow up on completed items.
- Produce a daily quality improvement report with status of rooms. Assign resources where needed for sanitation or repairs and determine the shut-down of rooms. Daily follow up on previous night’s resolution.
- Responsible for the coordination and handoff of each shift for QC and sanitation.
- Will supervise daily completion of duties within the QC lab to include daily lab records.
- Supervise and review microbiological, analytical, and organoleptic testing of raw materials and finished products.
- Support Regulatory department on monitoring and implementing new government or customer technical, regulatory, processes, procedures, and/or documents throughout CSC.
- Provide support/back-up in BRC, and other compliance audits, filling in as needed.
- Fill in for department’s positions during absences, as needed.
- Manage all aspects of employment life cycle for staffing to include but not be limited to: Interviewing, Selection, Training, Time management, Scheduling, Directing work, Promotions/Status changes, Disciplining, Terminations, Performance management, Monitoring and implementing legal compliance measures.
- Develop and execute a monitoring plan for all rooms and inspectors using Red Zone.
- Utilize CSC systems, proprietary and standard.
- Communicate regularly with Operations Director, Food Safety Manager, Quality Control Team, and Sanitation.
- Work closely with Plant Manager to coordinate solutions to quality issues and maintain food safety standards.
- Work closely with customer service and batching to expedite orders and meet customer needs.
- Assist customers and sales team in R&D/Technical support capacity.
- Provide regular reporting on KPI’s.
- Attend regular management and department meetings.
- Review, investigate, and report on customer quality complaints and provide appropriate corrective action and follow up.
- Maintain production and lab testing records related to quality and food safety.
- Responsible for ensuring appropriate training is complete for all staff within department.
- Manage COAs for Customers and Suppliers.
- Track lab deviations.
- Track and hold out of spec incoming ingredients/spices, in-process materials, and finished product.
- Track and trend environmental monitoring program data.
- Review daily issues in a timely manner to resolve and have a disposition.
- Manage outside lab communications.
- Coordinate lab food safety validations and proficiency testing with Food Safety.
- Create, organize, and implement continuous improvements for Quality Control Department.
- Conduct monthly review with staff meetings to ensure QC policies & procedures are being followed, address issues, and identify needed improvements.
- Order and maintain lab supplies, operate within QC budget.
- Conduct risk assessments to approve existing as well as new suppliers and ingredients.
- Review all new product formulations to ensure they meet customer requirements.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in laboratory/science field, Master’s degree preferred
- 10 years’ manufacturing experience
- 7 years’ management experience in the food manufacturing/processing industry required
- Experience in the seasoning or spice industry highly preferred
- 10 years’ experience in managing multiple direct reports, to include managers, supervisors, leads
- 10 years’ experience in general QA/QC operations
- 4 years’ experience leading food safety and compliance
- 4 years’ working lab experience with solid knowledge testing practices
- 4 years’ experience managing regulatory (customer & supplier)
- 4 years’ leading QC plant inspections
- 2 years’ leading sanitation
- 2 years’ experience supporting multiple locations
- Working knowledge of BRC or similar regulations
- Experience in customer relations and ability to communicate effectively with customers
- Must work and verbally communicate well with all levels of employees, executives, vendors, and customers
- Strong people skills- Must have demonstrated success in leading, developing and motivating teams
- Must be flexible in adapting to a changing work environment and work schedule
- Strong Organizational skills- Ability to maintain a clean, highly organized, and safe work environment
- Demonstrated Leadership skills; Ability to take ownership of the job and responsibilities

- Excellent oral and written skills are required; must be able to read, speak, and write fluently in American English
- Tasting/smelling: distinguishing, with a degree of accuracy, differences or similarities in intensity or quality of flavors and/or odors, or recognizing particular flavors and/or odors, using tongue and/or nose.
- Near and far visual acuity required
- Able to hear, understand and distinguish speech and/or other sounds such as machinery alarms
- Ability to sit and work at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time.
- Ability to walk or stand for extended periods of time.
- Push, pull, lift, & carry product, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 25lbs
- Ascend or descend ladders and walk at heights on platforms at least six feet or higher, as needed.
- Ability to perform all department jobs, as needed
- Must be self-motivated with strong initiative and have dependability with a sense of urgency
- Must have solid decision making and problem-solving skills
- Computer proficiency required; Highly proficient in Microsoft Office
- PCQI Trained preferred; ability to get trained required
- Must be available to work all shifts and weekends, to provide support as necessary and/or as scheduled.
- Occasionally work in an environment that is noisy, dusty and may contain spices with high heat intensity.
Salary : $90,000 - $160,000
