Required Skills:
- Graduation from an accredited respiratory therapy training program
- Licensure by Illinois Department of Professional Regulation
- C Registration of certification as a respiratory therapist-by the NBRC
- Current American Heart Association CPR (Healthcare Provider) card
- Pediatric experience preferred
Job Description:
- Maintains accountability for the management of all respiratory care services required by assigned patients.
- Accepts and responds to written and verbal physician orders.
- Responds to Code Blue situations and is a participant in the Code Blue team.
- Performs cardio-pulmonary resuscitation & performs pulmonary assessments.
- Administers and monitors patients' response to bronchodilators & performs complex respiratory treatments.
- Administers adequate ventilation and oxygenation using proper respiratory equipment, as prescribed.
- Initiates, maintains and weans mechanical ventilation of pediatric and young adult patients as prescribed.
- Administers aerosol therapy and humidification as prescribed.
- Assesses respiratory status of patients and communicates same to Charge Nurse.
- Responsible for maintaining knowledge and skills appropriate to the respiratory needs of patients at CHC.
- Obtains necessary information and demonstrates competence prior to implementing new or unfamiliar care practices.
- Executes the medical treatment plan by implementing MD orders for respiratory care.
- Assists in the assembly, disassembly, cleaning, and processing of respiratory therapy equipment according to department policies.
- Maintains the basic human rights and confidentiality of each patient, family and significant others in providing information and in delivering patient care.
- Assures patient airways clearance needs are met (Vest, CPT, postural drainage, lavage and suctioning) as prescribed and as per policy.
- Is aware of and complies with applicable standards, regulations and laws related to healthcare workers and the care of hospitalized patients, including but not limited to pain management, confidentiality, and abuse reporting, etc.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and consistently adheres to established precautions for infection control.
- Maintains a clean and secure treatment cart for assigned team.
- Actively participates in staff meetings and continuing education activities. Provides information and feedback to other staff members on related clinical and professional topics.
- The ability to perform effectively and efficiently under the pressure of stressful and/or emergency situations.
- Transports patients as needed.
- Able to maintain airway patency by performing appropriate tracheostomy care based on facility standards.
- Completes all documentation for patient charting in compliance with standards for accuracy and content as established by the department and CHC.
