This is skilled and specialized heating and air conditioning maintenance, installation, and repair work.
 
An employee in this class is responsible for the skilled operation, installation, repair and maintenance of complex commercial heating and air conditioning units and for the repair of auxiliary controls.  Work involves skilled electrical and plumbing work.
 
Work provides considerable opportunity for independent judgment in devising work methods and deciding materials to complete assignments.
Adjusts and calibrates electromechanical, electronic, and pneumatic controls for heating, cooling, and humidity.     Performs mathematical calculations in determining fuse size, amp draw, air volume, waterflow and other related HVAC operations.  Troubleshoots, diagnoses, repairs, or replaces window and floor mounted air conditioning units.  Makes chemical tests of chiller unit condenser water systems to determine calcium hardness, alkalinity, etc. of the water.  Adds treatment, in controlled amounts, to maintain the pH at a neutral level.   Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs cooling tower systems, high pressure steam boiler and associated condensate pump and electrical controls.  Installs copper pipe systems including fin-tube radiators.  Solders connections and performs high pressure brazing on connections.  Cuts, threads, and installs steel pipe to cast iron steam radiators, etc.   Maintains low pressure, gas fired, hot water heating boilers.  Makes sketches, schematics and "as built" drawings for existing or proposed installations.  Estimates and orders materials and supplies needed for installations and repair work.  Drives to pick up materials and supplies. Troubleshoots electrical malfunctions in motor start contacts and control panels.   Troubleshoots and eliminates problems with vacuum pumps, air compressors, circulating pumps, exhaust and intake blowers associated with heating, cooling, and ventilating equipment.   Installs and repairs steam pressure reducing valves, floats, and thermostatic traps.  Replaces mechanical seals on water pumps.  Performs related work as required.
Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of three years of paid experience in the maintenance and repair of commercial heating, cooling, and ventilating equipment, or an equivalent combination of paid experience and training. THE EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT MEANS THAT YOU MAY SUBSTITUTE UP TO 50% OF PAID EXPERIENCE WITH RELATED EDUCATION. Possession of a valid Universal Environmental Protection Agency Refrigerant Recovery certificate.  Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license.
 
Considerable knowledge of air conditioning principles of operation, steam boiler and hot water heating boiler operation, and of operating controls, repair, and adjustment.  Knowledge of pneumatic, electromechanical, and electronic controls and associated electric equipment involving voltages of 120, 208, 277 single-phase and 208, 480 three-phase.
 
Ability to detect and analyze electrical and mechanical malfunctions of heating, cooling, and ventilating installations and auxiliary controls.  Ability to read and work from schematic drawings and blueprints.  Ability to use and care for tools of the HVAC trade including oxy-acetylene, acetylene, and Map gas torches.  Ability to work at various heights and to load and unload heavy materials used in this work.  Ability to work independently and to function effectively as a member of a team.   Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.  List of essential job functions available upon request.
This is a classified position. 

The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education and experience.  A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience.  TEST WEIGHTS:  Competitive Examination 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%.  

Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.

NOTE: The competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates.  The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 70% for qualifying, 20% for education, and 10% for experience.

RESIDENCY:  Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.  

VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.

DRIVER’S LICENSE:  An applicant having a valid driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment.  Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
