DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This class performs general fire fighting and fire prevention duties. Employees in this class perform standardized manual work in combating and preventing fires, often under hazardous conditions. Although an employee is subject to fire fighting duty at any time, regular assignments include a substantial element of routine maintenance and custodial work on station and equipment. Regular assignments also include responding to emergency medical calls and rendering emergency medical service to members of the public. All work is performed under the general supervision of a fire officer and inspected upon completion.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative Only)
- Responds to fire alarms and emergency calls with fire company;
- Lays and connects hose lines and nozzles, turns water on and off;
- Holds fire hose and directs the streams;
- Operates a pressure pump;
- Puts up and climbs ladders, and enters burning buildings when necessary;
- Makes openings in burning buildings for ventilation and entrance;
- Removes persons from burning buildings;
- Performs salvage operations at the scene of fire, such as cleaning debris and covering furniture with tarpaulins;
- Learns and practices new methods;
- Drives and operates motor-driven fire fighting equipment;
- Performs miscellaneous clerical work when assigned;
- Assists in giving emergency medical treatment to members of the public;
- Makes periodic inspections of buildings for fire hazards;
- Cleans and maintains fire fighting equipment;
- Performs a variety of tasks in connection with the maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds;
- Enters and retrieves information in an automated information system;
- Performs related work as required.

- Possession of a valid New York State Health Department Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) Certification no less than five (5) weeks prior to appointment date and for the duration of employment.
