The City of Avondale is seeking a Senior Water Reclamation Operator in the Public Works Department. This is a full-time, FLSA non-exempt position with benefits.
The Senior Water Reclamation Operator performs a variety of tasks to support the City’s Water Reclamation Facility (WRF). The position performs daily activities that include the operation of equipment to ensure proper plant functionality; maintenance of infrastructure and equipment utilized in the treatment process; troubleshooting, testing, and repair of treatment equipment, and assisting with equipment replacement as needed.
Under direct supervision of the Water Reclamation Facility Supervisor, the Senior Water Reclamation Operator also performs daily process control tests and advises on operational adjustments; monitors process efficiency and quality, and consistently works to maintain permit compliance. The position monitors flow and process control data, monitors chemical dosing, conducts chemical inventories, and performs other complex wastewater treatment plant operations.
The Senior Water Reclamation Operator utilizes a computer-based maintenance management system to maintain complete and accurate records related to all job functions. This position requires advanced technical knowledge of the wastewater treatment process.Works as a member of the WRF’s operation and maintenance team. Performs daily tasks that include operation and maintenance of WRF infrastructure and equipment; troubleshooting, testing, and repair of any equipment that is not operating correctly; assisting with equipment replacement as needed.
Performs daily process control testing; evaluates processes and procedures for improvements and makes operational adjustment recommendations to improve the overall functionality of the plant and to help maintain permit compliance.
Monitors wastewater flow and process control data, performs sampling, monitors chemical dosing, conducts chemical inventories, and assists with other wastewater laboratory testing as required.
Follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to complete required tasks. Assists in the development and/or revision of SOPs to improve the work process. Utilizes a computer-based maintenance management system to track maintenance assignments and record details of all work performed.
Researches and investigates new wastewater treatment technologies and/or equipment to make recommendations for process improvements based on findings.
Assists with on-the-job training and development of junior operators in technical functions, plant operation, plant equipment, instruments and controls, laboratory functions, worker safety, and more.
Assists with inspections by regulatory agencies and leads tours through the plant site. Coordinates with vendors, material suppliers, and other stakeholders as required.
May be called upon to assist other divisions within the Department and perform other duties as required.High School Diploma or GED equivalency is required.
Work requires a general knowledge of the technical, mechanical, and chemical workings of a water reclamation facility. Additional knowledge obtained through a vocational school or technical college is preferred.
A minimum of three (3) years of experience working in a wastewater treatment facility or similar facility, is required.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered if sufficient to perform the essential duties of the role as listed herein.
Must possess an Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Wastewater Treatment Grade III upon hire and must maintain this certification for the duration of employment.
A valid Arizona Class D Driver's License is required.Work requires the ability to read technical documents, schematics, construction plans, technical specifications, regulations, permits, Safety Data Sheets, O&M manuals, standard operating procedures, repair manuals, and more.
Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Work requires the ability to write daily logs, reports, work orders, and general correspondence.
Planning responsibilities include effective time management for daily work assignments and inspections; making recommendations regarding long-range plans; contributing to various projects; establishing and maintaining inventory levels and coordinating with regulatory agencies.
Prepares documents or provides supporting information that would be used to track financial resources or prepare the annual budget.
Works directly with and collaborates with other WRF Operators, Mechanics, and WRF staff. Assumes responsibility for completing assigned projects with available resources.
Work is governed by broad instructions, objectives, and policies. Under the guidance of the Water Reclamation Facility Supervisor and Lead Water Reclamation Operator, exercise considerable initiative, independent analytical skills, and evaluative judgment.
This position makes contact with others within the organization. These contacts may involve similar work units or departments within the City, which may be involved in decision-making or provide approval for purchases or projects.
This position makes infrequent contact with outside entities, groups, and the general public, but must represent the City in a professional manner, including attitude and appearance when required.
Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner is required.
Employee must maintain regular in-person attendance.
