Wastewater Lift Station Operator


  • Maintains and installs industrial instrumentation and controls equipment at advanced water renewal (wastewater treatment) facilities, lift stations, and other public works utilities.
  • Ensures that all electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic instruments are properly installed and maintained in accordance with manufacturer and permit requirements.
  • This position works under general supervision.

Essential Functions

Performs journey-level installation, calibration, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of industrial process instruments and control devices per regulatory codes, manufacturer’s specifications and site standards. Plans and coordinates maintenance activities based on assigned priority and potential impact to facility operations. Conducts verification and calibration processes on multiple measuring devices, including safety equipment, to ensure complete accuracy and viability.

Creates and maintains detailed maintenance records utilizing computerized asset management programs, ensuring compliance with local, state and federal rules, regulations and laws. Assists with the collection and recording of equipment information and the development of maintenance schedules and procedures.

Assists other skilled trades with the general operation, maintenance and repair of industrial wastewater equipment, facilities, lift stations, odor control facilities. Often works at remote locations throughout the service area. Maintains a safe, clean and orderly work environment.

Attends and completes assigned training as required to ensure compliance with city policy, state and federal regulation and maintain professional licensing and certification.

Conducts daily, weekly, monthly and annual health checks and inspections on various instruments and controls to ensure proper maintenance and functionality.


Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training

  • High school diploma or equivalent and
  • 4 years of experience installing, repairing and maintaining industrial instrumentation and control systems, or
  • an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Knowledge of:
  • wastewater or lift station operation and process control theory and practices;
  • mechanical and electrical instrument systems and calibration methods;
  • occupational hazards and safety procedures;
  • multi-meters, process simulators, oscilloscopes, device and loop calibrators and Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems;
  • blueprints and circuit schematics reading and interpretation;
  • city policies, procedures and protocols;
  • operation/use of required equipment and tools; and
  • computer usage including related software.
Ability to:
  • troubleshoot electronic and pneumatic systems;
  • maintain required certifications;
  • communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; and
  • perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation.
Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
  • Associate's degree in instrumentation or similar discipline.
  • 4 years of experience installing, repairing and maintaining industrial instrumentation and control systems.
  • Demonstrated understanding of wastewater treatment and/or lift station/collection system operations and processes.
Licensing And Other Requirements
  • Valid state-issued driver's license.
  • Electrical Specialty Journey level License- Idaho Limited Energy, International Society of Automation Certified Control Systems Technician (ISA-CCST) or an International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians Certification (ISCET) within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to obtain an Idaho Wastewater Treatment or Collection Class I License or Operator in Training (OIT) certificate within 6 months of employment.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
Special Requirements
Applicants must be able to pass:
  • City of Boise background check processes which includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation

This position is required to handle hazardous materials that if mishandled, place the general public at risk of serious injury.

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently lifting/carrying up to 35 pounds, occasionally lifting/carrying up to 100 pounds and rarely lifting/carrying up to 101 pounds. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds, frequently pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds, occasionally pushing/pulling up to 100 pounds and rarely pushing/pulling up to 101 pounds. The noise level is always moderate, frequently loud and occasionally very loud. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, runn, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.Additional physical efforts include: ability to work on equipment that can only be reached from ladders and lift equipment..

Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, in wet and humid conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Employees are exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards, work in/at heights and confined spaces. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids and chemicals. Employees work in industrial areas, on stairs or uneven surfaces, near open tanks and near ditches, and in confined spaces. Employees are subject to slip hazards caused from ice/snow in winter, wet floors, uneven and undeveloped work surfaces. Protected exposure to insects, chemicals and atmospheric hazards.
This position works: evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required and reports to the facility in times of emergencies. Work may be performed/ assigned at any of the city’s public works utilities. Employees may work at remote or isolated facilities a considerable distance from supporting resources.
