Job Description Summary:
Under direct supervision, the Water Quality Trainee supports multiple aspects of the Water Quality program, including compliance with drinking water, stormwater and wastewater regulations. The position will have the opportunity to learn about and conduct water quality sampling and field work, GIS data entry and mapping support, record research, and water quality data input and analysis. The work will be in person in Boulder conducting both office work and field work. The Water Quality Trainee will be expected to organize project work and communicate professionally with staff.Job Description:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This position may include the following:
- Conducting water quality sample collection and analysis.
- Conducting field inspections and documenting findings.
- Entering and analyzing data to support water quality regulations using Microsoft Excel. asset management software and ArcGIS.
- Reviewing records and contacting customers to support compliance with water quality regulations.
- Performing related duties as required to meet the needs of the Water Quality team.

- Ability to demonstrate proficiency or ability to become proficient in reading engineering plan sets, conducting mapping in ArcGIS, conducting data collection fieldwork, and conducting statistical analyses in Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to proactively and effectively plan and execute work in a timely fashion to ensure reliable execution of all daily tasks and to follow through on special assignments. Highly organized related to field data collection, organization, and conducting time-sensitive follow-up communications and tasks.

- Ability to read and effectively synthesize technical data into written reports. Has excellent interpersonal skills and interest in interacting with customers and the public in a cordial and professional manner.

- Knowledge and basic familiarity with ArcGIS software and basic geoprocessing tools.
- Knowledge and previous data entry experience and statistical analysis experience using Microsoft Excel.
- Valid Driver’s License and ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.
- Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to demonstrate work experience or coursework in water quality, chemistry, ecology, or watershed science.
- Ability to demonstrate experience conducting fieldwork to collect data and information.
- Ability to demonstrate experience interacting with the public in a professional setting.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Pursuing a degree or certificate in Engineering or Environmental/Physical Sciences.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Physical and Mental Effort: Physical ability to work outside in locations throughout the city requiring standing, walking, lifting, bending, and kneeling; the ability to manually remove heavy manhole covers; frequent hand/eye coordination to operate personal computer and field equipment; vision for reading, recording, and interpreting information; speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and the public. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines and changing priorities and conditions.
- Work Environment: Work is split between field and office work. Field work will include being out in inclement weather including precipitation and heat and cold.
- Machines and Equipment Used: Field equipment, sample collection equipment, GPS equipment, personal computers, smart phones, copy/scanning machines.
