Assistant Mechanic

The Assistant Mechanic will support the maintenance and repair of the city's fleet, including heavy equipment, vehicles, and machinery. This role involves performing preventive maintenance, assisting in major repairs, and ensuring all equipment operates safely and efficiently.  The position will assist with building maintenance and snow plowing as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assist in performing inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on city vehicles and equipment.
• Conduct minor repairs, such as oil changes, tire repairs, and general servicing.
• Support senior mechanic in overhauling engines and transmissions.
• Utilize diagnostic equipment to identify mechanical issues.
• Maintain accurate records of services and repairs performed.
• Ensure compliance with safety standards and protocols.
• Assist in maintaining inventory of parts and tools.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the senior mechanic.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Proficiency in using hand and power tools.
• Ability to operate diagnostic equipment.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Valid driver's license; ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 180 days of employment.
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform tasks requiring bending, stretching, and standing for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with hydraulic and electrical systems.
• Familiarity with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and compliance.
• Certification in Diesel Mechanics or a related field, or a minimum of two years of experience in heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
