Job Description
The City of Chesapeake is currently seeking an energetic and dedicated team player to fill an entry-level Traffic Signal Technician I position within our Public Works/Traffic Operations Division. Traffic Operations focuses on 24/7/365 installation, maintenance, operation, and repair of the City’s 204 traffic signals and emergency signals at Fire Stations, emergency vehicle preemption systems, and operation and maintenance of 34 school zone flashers. This position is part of a team consisting of seven (7) Traffic Signal Technicians responsible for the maintenance, repair, and installation of all city-owned traffic signals. The successful candidate needs to have a high-school diploma or GED; must have industrial electrical experience; can tolerate heights; work in inclement weather conditions; possess a valid driver’s license that is in compliance with the City’s Driving Standards; possess the ability to acquire a CDL license and fall protection certification within one year of hire; an IMSA (International Municipal Signal Association) certification is preferred; and possess the ability to learn and understand new technologies in vehicle detection and communication systems as it relates to signal operations;

Typical tasks include but are not limited to:
  • Assist Traffic Signal Technician II’s in the fabrication, erection, installation, repair and operation of the City’s traffic signals, related control devices and other ITS equipment.


  • Maintains city owned street lighting and provides responses to underground traffic signal utilities location requests.

  • Assists in meeting with various contractors when directed to discuss equipment installation and repairs.

  • Maintains record system for assigned area, processes daily paperwork including reports, requisitions and personnel information, and investigates citizen inquiries.

  • Stays abreast of new technology and advancement in the traffic signal field and makes recommendations for changes.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in electronics or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of six months of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license with a driving record in compliance with the City Driving Standards. Commercial Driver’s license permit required at time of hire.

Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Fall Protection certification must be obtained within one year of hire. International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Technician I certification preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
