Traffic Operations Worker
JOB TITLE: Traffic Operations Worker
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt
DEPARTMENT: Public Works/Traffic
SUPERVISOR: Traffic Operations Manager; and on-the-job supervision from the technician or supervisor to whom assigned.
SALARY: $36,135 to $50,589 Annually
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION
To perform routine tasks involved in the installation and maintenance of traffic control indicators including traffic signs, pavement markings, and traffic signals; and to perform a variety of routine tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for installing and maintaining traffic signs. Set up temporary traffic control at work sites for the safety of employees and the public.
- Operate all sign installation equipment safely and efficiently. Provide basic maintenance for equipment.
- Fabricate traffic signs and construct special signing.
- Responsible for installing and maintaining pavement markings including lane lines, edge lines, stop bars, words, crosswalks, etc.
- Prepare paint and other equipment for field operations. Set up temporary traffic control for pavement marking projects.
- Operate the small paint machine, sprayer and paint removal equipment. Assist in the operation of the large paint striper. Provide basic maintenance and repairs to all paint equipment.
- Assist other sections of the Division including the operation of equipment and basic maintenance of signals. Demonstrates the knowledge of and has practical experience to perform functions without constant supervision. Acts as lead man of seasonal crew or other assigned temporary crew members. Basic knowledge of the signing and pavement marking sections of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, as well as applicable City standards for signs.
- Assist the Traffic Engineer with various traffic studies. i.e., mechanical traffic counts and manual turning movement counts.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Basic operations of a traffic signing, marking, and signal program.
- Basic methods and techniques of installing and maintaining traffic control indicators.
- Basic operational characteristics of spray equipment, striping machines or hot plastic equipment and tools.
- Basic standards of uniform traffic control principles, devices, and maintenance methods.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
- Perform semi-skilled and routine tasks in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices.
- Operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during work.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB
Required:
Some construction experiences. International Municipal Signal Association certification in Signs/Markings, Level I within one year of hire.
Preferred:
Traffic systems maintenance experience.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 30 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.
Working Environment:
Travel from site to site; office, field, and shop environment; exposure to noise, dust, fumes, gases, and inclement weather conditions; work around heavy construction equipment.
