Description

This position uses computer-aided drafting and design software to prepare complex engineering and planning drawings in support of the design and development of City water, sewer, storm drainage and road projects; and performs related work as assigned. The incumbent works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

The work is considered light in nature and involves walking or standing much of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a recurring basis, or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy. The work requires the following physical abilities to perform the essential job functions: fingering, grasping, kneeling, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, repetitive motion, talking, and visual acuity.

Work environment involves exposure to no known environmental hazards; and is relatively safe, secure, and stable.

Essential Job Functions

  • Uses computer-aided drafting and design software to prepare complex engineering and planning drawings in support of the design and development of City water, sewer, storm drainage and road projects;
  • Prepares documents required for construction and regulatory approval of various projects;
  • Plots existing topography and proposed improvements from field book and data collector notes;
  • Prepares plats for easement acquisition and construction permits;
  • Prepares maps, diagrams, charts and other graphics needed by the City for display or visual assistance;
  • Researches maps, plans, diagrams, etc., as requested to obtain technical information for project engineers and others;
  • Provides as-built and planning drawings using CADD Software Civil 3-D;
  • Conducts field visits;
  • Assists in maintaining standard operating procedures for the use and maintenance of computer programs;
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date project records;
  • Provides technical assistance to other divisions and departments on assigned engineering projects;
  • Provides assistance on special projects;
  • Attends training, seminars and conferences to maintain job knowledge and skills;
  • Attends department, committee and other meetings as necessary;
  • Performs general administrative / clerical work as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, sending and receiving faxes, answering the telephone, etc.; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:


  • High School Diploma and two (2) years of relevant experience OR Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology, Construction Management or a closely related field; and
  • Valid South Carolina Class “D” Driver’s License;

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of algebra, geometry and differentiation and integration as relevant to civil engineering design and quantity estimation. Ability to gather, organize, analyze, examine or evaluate data or information and may prescribe action based on such data or information;
  • Ability to speak or signal to people to convey or exchange information of a general nature;
  • Ability to lead, operate or repair complex machinery or equipment that requires extended training and experience, such as computer-aided design and drafting software; may involve installation and testing.
  • Ability to perform skilled work involving rules/systems with almost constant problem-solving;
  • Ability to read technical instructions, procedures, manuals and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format; speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form;
  • Ability to perform specialized technical or entry-level professional work requiring general understanding of operating policies and procedures and their application to problems not previously encountered; application of specialized technical or professional principles and practices or the use of a wide range of administrative methods in the solution of problems; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results and occasional exposure to unusual pressure; and
  • Ability to guide others, requiring frequent decisions affecting co-workers and others who depend on the service or product; works in a somewhat fluid environment with rules and procedures but with many variations from the routine.
