Job Summary:
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in maintaining wastewater and water pumping stations. This position is an "ON CALL" position as it relates to the department's residency guidelines.
Examples of work performed: repairs and performs the maintenance on the department's water and wastewater pumping stations; disassembles and overhauls pumps, valves, electric motors, and other equipment relating to pumping stations to effect the transfer and regulate pressure of water and wastewater; installs, repairs and replaces electrical equipment; inspects defective equipment and diagnoses malfunctions; orders necessary parts and supplies; prepares and maintains records for all equipment and parts and supplies; operates high pressure sewer cleaning truck; operates boom truck; operates computer for checking lift stations (SCADA); performs facility and vehicle maintenance; performs other work as required.
Required Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of the materials and equipment used in servicing water and wastewater systems
Knowledge of efficient methods and procedures for mechanical and electrical maintenance. of equipment and machinery
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
Ability to service and overhaul a variety of pumps and peripheral equipment used in water and wastewater systems
Ability to use the necessary tools
Ability to operate a high pressure sewer cleaning truck Ability to operate a boom truck
Ability to operate light motor vehicles
Ability to keep routine records and make reports
Ability to operate computer for checking lift stations (SCADA)
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.
Qualifications:
High school education or equivalent is required. Classes in pump and electrical maintenance and in maintaining water or wastewater pumping stations is preferred. Must possess a valid TN driver's license; must possess or have the ability to obtain a CDL within 6 months of hire date; boom truck certification required within 2 years of employment.
Essential Functions:
Work involves frequent physical exertion including walking, climbing, bending, stooping and lifting. Requires physical strength when manipulating pumps and equipment. Worker may be exposed to biological hazards through contact with raw sewage. Possible exposure to hydrogen sulfide and methane gas. Exposed to all weather conditions. Requires lifting items of 100 pounds or more. Access to some equipment is precarious. Will work with active electrical circuits. Worker is continuously exposed to such conditions as dirt, oil, grease, sewage, noise and temperature extremes. Subjected to hazardous gases when working in manholes, wet wells, etc. Subject to being called out at all hours. Must abide by the department's residency guidelines.
