What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate Planner position at City of East Point?
· Intakes applications relating to zoning, variance, special use permits, preliminary plat and final plat;
· Assigns case numbers to all applications and logs them in tracking system; maintains case file tracking system;
· Participates in site plan review and permitting activities;
· Prepares and presents Department recommendations to Planning & Zoning Commission;
· Attends monthly meetings with zoning attorney;
· Prepares Zoning and Alcohol Zoning Certification Letters;
· Prepares and advertises legal notices;
· Meets with applicants and reviews potential developments; explains the procedures of the zoning process and assists the applicant with application procedures;
· Serves as a liaison between applicant and Planning & Zoning Commissioners for any communication between the two parties;
· Facilitates Planning & Zoning Commission Meeting;
· Attends applicable workshops, forums and training sessions;
· Represents the City and department at various meetings including after hour meetings as needed;
· Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in City Planning or related technical field; three (3) years work experience in related field; must obtain GSWCC Erosion & Sediment Control Level 1A certification; must possess valid State of Georgia driver’s license equivalent combination of education and experience.
· Knowledge of City and department policies and procedures;
· Knowledge of City and State planning requirements;
· Knowledge of modern principles, practices, operations, services and activities of zoning and planning programs;
· Knowledge of City zoning ordinances, codes, regulations and policies;
· Skill in using independent judgment and discretion;
· Skill in prioritizing and scheduling assignments;
· Skill in operating modern office equipment;
· Skill in basic computer applications for word processing and spreadsheets;
· Ability to analyze and interpret data, studies, laws, regulations, goals and objectives to City officials, developers and the general public;
· Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others;
· Ability to maintain routine records;
· Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
· Ability to identify, coordinate and resolve a wide variety of issues in the development of land use policy;
· Ability to operate City vehicles.
Supervisory Controls: The Director or Senior Planner assign work in terms of general instructions. Work is reviewed for accuracy and the nature and propriety of the final results.
Guidelines: Guidelines include department and City policies and procedures, City codes and ordinances, state and federal planning and zoning regulations. These guidelines require sound judgment and interpretation in application.
Complexity: The work consists of a variety of administrative and technical duties.
Scope and Effect: The purpose of this position is to coordinate planning activities with City departments, local, state and federal agencies. Successful implementation ensures compliance with local, state and federal planning and zoning regulations.
Personal Contacts: Contacts are typically with co-workers, developers, engineers, real estate professional consultants and the general public.
