Safety/Security Sensitive Designation: This is a safety/security sensitive position for purposes of the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment and is subject to random drug and alcohol screening.

  1. Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially members of their own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. 
  2. Perform major repair and rebuilding of vehicle components, electrical systems, brake systems, gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions.
  3. Analyze and diagnose major mechanical problems and malfunctions on all types of engines, transmissions, drive trains and track systems.  
  4. Troubleshoot and correct major repair problems by use of a variety of test equipment such as volt meters, hydraulic flow-meters, heat indicators, computerized diagnostic equipment and computer testing and calibration software.
  5. Road test and inspect units to identify needed repairs; perform road tests and final inspections of completed work to ensure all phases of preventive and corrective maintenance have been completed to established standards.  Notifies Lead Equipment Mechanic or other supervisory staff of unusual repair problems requiring further repair.
  6. Perform welding and fabrication operations and installation of specialized vocational equipment to new and existing fleet equipment.
  7. Participate in and instruct mechanics and maintenance workers in the more difficult mechanical work such as rebuilding diesel combustion engines, transmissions, or other major repair work; and troubleshooting components, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems. 
  8. Assist in training new employees to properly maintain vehicles or equipment.
  9. Keep records of time and parts used in repairs, complete work orders and technical notes of repairs needed and performed on fleet management software.
  10. Evaluate the need for replacement parts and place requests for parts with the Fleet Warehouse.
  11. Work with computer system for time keeping and parts distribution. Update vehicle files on Fleet Management System in order to maintain and lookup vehicle history on parts and repairs; create work orders and add notes.
  12. Assist Fleet Operations Supervisor in acquiring estimates for outside labor and recommend shops for outside repair.        Assist with evaluation of potential vendors along with an evaluation of facilities.
  13. Must be available to work shifts during emergency situations such as snow, ice, storms or other catastrophic events. 
  14. Perform other duties as assigned.

  1. High school diploma or GED and Master ASE with 7 years’ of related experience, or completion of Automotive or Diesel Trade School and 5 years’ experience. 
  2. Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License.  
  3. Effectively communicate with others orally and in writing.
  4. Must maintain current knowledge of software programs and be able to diagnose and troubleshoot the following engines and transmissions: Cat, Mack, Navistar, Cummins, Ford, GM, Chrysler and Allison. These programs will be available through computer based training, testing and certification.
  5. Considerable knowledge of methods, materials, equipment and operation of a repair shop engaged in repair of gasoline and diesel powered equipment. Knowledge of automotive maintenance repair and testing and operating and preventive maintenance requirements of light and heavy equipment and vehicles. 
  6. Clear understanding of operation of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic circuits and components, their functions and operation, including the ability to read schematics.  
  7. Must be able to effectively operate tools for heavy-duty mechanical maintenance and repair, special diagnostic and mechanical adjustment equipment and various types of vehicles and equipment.
  8. Must have general knowledge of safety equipment and practices used in operation of a vehicle/equipment maintenance facility. This includes hazards and safety precautions of heavy-duty maintenance and repair work, availability and proper use of safety equipment and supplies. 
  9. Must be able to effectively operate a computer and other related software programs. Must be able to effectively operate standard office equipment. 
  10. Must have mechanical ability and agility to perform repairs on a variety of equipment.
  11.  While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.  The employee regularly is required to stand, walk, and sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds and occasionally 100 pounds.  
  12. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of vibration, risk of electrical shock and outside weather conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to high precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
  13. Availability for emergency on-call rotation preferred.

Salary : $45,864 - $68,536
