General Statement of Duties Collect and analyze samples for the purpose of compliance and process control work in the environmental science/services division. Performs routine technical and laboratory testing and clerical work in the chemical and bacteriological analysis of drinking water, wastewater, industrial wastes, and by-products of the treatment process.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Distinguishing Features of the Class An employee in this class is responsible for performing a variety of standardized laboratory tests and analyses of water and wastewater, industrial wastes, and by-products of the treatment process. Work primarily involves bacteriological testing, quality control, chemical testing, sample collection, and general laboratory clerical work. Work is evaluated for correctness in analyses, the accuracy of reports, and knowledge of current safety regulations, through observation of work in progress, review of analyses, and review of reports. This employee is cross-trained to perform laboratory testing at the water and wastewater treatment plant. Work is performed under the general supervision of the laboratory supervisor or utilities compliance manager. Work is evaluated through the conference, and reviewing records for adherence to laboratory standards, instructions, and safety practices. Illustrative Examples of Work Collects water, wastewater, and industrial samples as needed to meet compliance and process control for the department. Utilizing various laboratory equipment, including incubator, top loading balance, water baths, fume hood, hot plates, sterilizers, and filtering apparatus. Performing daily bacteriological testing by cooking, autoclaving, and performing a sterility check. Performing quality control by calibrating thermometers, calibrating meters, and performing growth checks on media to complete state forms to document quality control procedures. Preparing metal samples by digesting, concentrating, and filtering water samples, industry samples, and wastewater samples. Collecting samples for water complaints and new lines. Typing letters and chain of custody forms; filing; and other clerical duties. Cleaning of the laboratory, equipment and glassware, while maintaining an organized and efficient laboratory. Performs other required duties as assigned.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Position Qualifications The position requires a valid North Carolina driver’s license and completion of High School or equivalent and some laboratory work experience or an Associate’s degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science or a related field. The position also requires the ability to obtain (1) Water Bacteriology and a NC DEQ Grade "C" Surface Water Certification or (2) Process Control Chemistry Certification and a NC DEQ Wastewater Grade I Certification within three years of employment.
