JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for keeping the roadways and sidewalks in good condition as well as the city clean.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Operates equipment such as leaf machine, chipper, tack machine, crack sealer, truck, and dump truck.
- Concrete finisher.
- Patches and lays asphalt on roads.
- Contacts 811 to mark underground utility service lines.
- Maintains and repairs equipment.
- Maintains streets and sidewalks.
- Participates in annual recertification of asbestos removal.
- Flags traffic.
- Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of street construction, maintenance, and repair procedures and methods.
- Knowledge of City and department policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of city geography, including the locations of streets and rights of way.
- Knowledge of the operation of a variety of street construction equipment.
- Knowledge of potential hazards and safety measures when using equipment.
- Knowledge of road signage.
- Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
- Skill in interpersonal and communication skills.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Street Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include City’s standard operating procedure, State Department of Transportation guidelines, and street construction and maintenance practices. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of varied street construction and maintenance duties. Unpredictable weather contributes to the complexity of the work.
- The purpose of this position is to keep the roadways in good condition and the city clean. Successful performance in this position means the roads will be maintained and repaired efficiently and effectively.
CONTACTS
- Contacts are co-workers, utilities, law enforcement, fire department, 811 service and the general public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information or to provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while intermittently standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping.
- The work is typically performed in a very noisy place that exposes the employee to dust, dirt, and grease. The employee is exposed to machinery with moving parts, and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- No experience requirements.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
