JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for assisting in the operation of a water treatment plant as a trainee.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Assists in operating equipment to control water flow and maintain proper operating levels.
- Learns and assists in monitoring the SCADA system to ensure proper plant operations.
- Assists in servicing, maintaining, repairing, and operating facilities and equipment, including pumping devices, chlorination and other chemical feed systems, storage facilities, and related equipment.
- Assists in collecting water samples; assists in performing laboratory analyses to ensure that treatment facilities are operating efficiently; assists in carrying out corrective actions.
- Makes rounds of plant; reads gauges and meters; records readings.
- Assists in maintaining maintenance and chemical analysis records.
- Maintains plant facilities and grounds.
- Assists in calibrating equipment.
- Attends required training classes.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of treatment principles, operations, and equipment.
- Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
- Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures and federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of water plant maintenance principles.
- Skill in the operation and maintenance of mechanical and electronic equipment.
- Skill in planning, organization, and decision making.
- Skill in thinking clearly under difficult circumstances.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Lead Water Treatment Plant Operator assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include the Safe Drinking Water Act, state water treatment rules and regulations, plant standard operating procedures, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related plant operation duties. Changes to water conditions combined with strict regulations contribute to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to assist in the operations of a water treatment plant as a trainee. Success in this position contributes to the delivery of safety drinking water to customers.

- Contacts are typically with co-workers, customers, vendors, and members of the general public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
- The work is typically performed in a water treatment plant and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of masks, goggles, and gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- No experience requirements.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's licenses issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
