THE POSITION:
The City of Hayward is excited to announce an opportunity to join its progressive and dynamic Transportation Division as an Assistant Transportation Engineer. Reporting to the Deputy Director of Public Works, the Assistant Transportation Engineer will play a key role in supporting the delivery of transportation projects to provide a safer and more sustainable transportation system in the City. These innovative and safety-focused projects will help advance the City’s Vision Zero and Climate Action Plan goals. Typical projects involve multi-modal roadway design, traffic calming, traffic engineering analysis, and intelligent transportation systems.THE POSITION:

The ideal candidate will be eager to learn and possess an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification with a strong education and technical background in transportation and traffic engineering. The candidate will excel in a collaborative working environment and work effectively in multiple teams. The candidate will be community-focused and represent the City in a professional manner, while being comfortable communicating directly with the public.
What you will do: Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Conduct field studies and analyze traffic conditions and issues.
- Prepare transportation engineering plans and alternate plans, including cost estimates.
- Design transportation engineering projects, including specifications for traffic signals, street signs and markings, street lighting, channelization, and parking facilities with full awareness of traffic safety principles.
- Perform calculations and computations related to traffic design and analysis.
- Check construction plans and design detours around construction sites.
- Confer with contractors, engineers, property owners, courts and other agencies.
- Answer inquiries, investigate complaints, and provide information to the general public.
- Attend project meetings and engineering conferences.
- Read and interpret local, state, and federal traffic ordinances and regulations.
- Prepare grant applications for special funding.
- Direct and review work of other professional and technical personnel.
- Assist with implementation of City traffic calming (speed hump) program.

CORE COMPETENCIES
Knowledge of:
- Engineering principles and practices as they relate to transportation planning, design and traffic operations.
- Street geometric design, including Federal, State and City standards.
- Apply statistical principles to transportation engineering problems.
- Analyze traffic characteristics relative to volume, speed, and accidents.
- Identify intersection or street capacity levels, and prepare level of service analysis for existing and proposed projects.
- Communicate, both verbally and in writing
- Work cooperatively and develop effective relationships at all levels, especially the public.
- Work independently, bringing projects to completion within established time guidelines.
JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS You have:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Two (2) years in engineering related to transportation engineering or closely related field.
Education: A Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil or Traffic Engineering from a recognized college or university.
License: A Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil or Traffic Engineering from a recognized college or university.
Ability to obtain an Engineer-In-Training (E.I.T.) Certificate issued by the California Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers within one year of hire.
