Job Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Police Officer to join our law enforcement team. As a Police Officer, you will play a critical role in maintaining public safety and enforcing the law. SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
As a sworn law enforcement officer, this position is to protect life and property by enforcing all city statues, ordinances, and the laws and regulations of the state for which the Police Department is accountable. Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job description.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting fellow officers with interdepartmental duties and city activities
- Responding to the needs of the public by compiling reports, preparing cases for trial, and appearing in court
- Maintaining and updating records for proper documentation
- Working to achieve the highest level of cooperation thereby enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of law enforcement within the city
- Perform related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES
- May patrol the city on foot or in radio-equipped vehicle to enforce federal, state, and local laws, administrative regulations, and ordinances, and to prevent and/or discover the commission of crime. Responds to calls received during shift; investigates suspicious conditions and complaints. Intervenes in interpersonal crisis, conflict, and domestic violence situations to protect life, property, and personal rights. Initiates investigations into all suspicious or hazardous circumstances observed while patrolling assigned area. Investigates and reports information regarding all incidents of crime personally discovered or reported by a citizen; conducts covert activities or surveillance assignments as assigned. Performs and assists in specialized tasks as directed. Prepares statements of suspects, witnesses, and victims. Arrests, books, and/or processes criminal-law violators. Issues citations. Cooperates in the prosecution of criminal offenders by testimony as directed. Serves summons, warrants and subpoenas. Transports prisoners. Provides traffic control services in connection with school crossings, inoperative electronic traffic control devices, accidents, parades, and extraordinary events. Maintains public order in crowds, parades, funerals, or other public gatherings.
- May render first-aid; may assist ambulance and fire/rescue services in emergency situations. Checks public buildings, businesses, and residential areas to enhance security against trespass, damage, and unsafe conditions. Administer breathalyzer test, if applicable. Investigate accidents and prepare reports. Renders emergency assistance to citizens and the public as needed. Provides appropriate information to citizens regarding crime prevention. May perform special related duties in special details or administrative services. Prepares written reports on shift activities. Establishes rapport with citizens of the community. Participates in training programs to maintain certification. Police officers must carry a firearm and have the power to make an arrest.
- Non-Essential: May be assigned to specialized functions such as D.A.R.E Officer, Community Services, Neighborhood Watch Program, etc.
KNOWLEDGE OF
·Current diverse issues in police laws and ordinances pertaining to statutory and procedural law, and civil liability.
·Principals, practices, and techniques of modern law enforcement, including knowledge of prime detection, criminal investigation, and radio communications.
· Current developments in the field of law enforcement including policies, procedures, rules, regulations, patrol procedures and techniques, etc.
· Computer technology; including hardware and software.
· Geography of the city and designated areas, including the social characteristics of the city.
· Operations, services, and activities of a comprehensive municipal law enforcement

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Graduate level education in a law enforcement related field may be considered in lieu of experience.
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION & LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
Valid driver’s license. Must be at least 21 years of age. Graduation from high school or equivalent. Must have completed required law enforcement basic training or equivalent and must complete required in-service training each year. A degree in Police Administration, graduate of advanced police studies program preferred, or related field preferred. Additional supervisory experience in law enforcement may substitute for college education.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Typically work is performed in an outdoor setting regardless of weather conditions. However, some work may be performed in a standard office setting and emergency peace control; Travel from site to site; exposure to potentially hostile environments and the elements. However, must be able to perform all the duties of a Police Officer and assigned tasks. Operate Police equipment as efficiently and economically as possible under a variety of conditions and in accordance with law and established procedures.
·Maintain sufficient physical ability as appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities. Examples: Moderate lifting; walking, sitting, or standing for extended periods of time; discharging firearms; reacting quickly to emergency situations; operating motorized vehicles. This includes, but is not limited to, computer and radio equipment, cameras and audio and video recording equipment.
·Normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents. Normal hearing range with or without correction.
·Must be able to work irregular shifts. Must be able to respond to calls in emergency situations at all hours.
·Must be able to meet the job-related physical and psychological requirements in effect at the time of appointment, and must pass and job-related mental, psychological, and/or physical qualifying examinations the are deemed necessary. (See KRS Chapter 95 for additional requirements.)
·Tools, Equipment, Vehicles Used: Police cruiser, firearms, baton, hand cuffs; pepper spray, radio, camera, breathalyzer, PBT, fire extinguisher, normal office equipment (telephone, computer, etc.).
