Position Overview:
The Building Inspector is responsible for ensuring that construction projects, both new and existing, comply with local, state, and federal codes, regulations, and safety standards. The inspector performs skilled inspections, reviews plans, issues permits, and provides technical assistance to homeowners and contractors. In addition to daily inspection duties, the Building Inspector manages the Building Department’s operations, including overseeing budget processes and enforcing code violations related to property conditions, weed control, and vehicle abatement.
Key Responsibilities:
- Inspect new and existing commercial and residential buildings for compliance with the Uniform Building Code (UBC), Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC), National Electrical Code (NEC), and other local, state, and federal regulations.
- Review building plans, issue building permits, and ensure adherence to approved plans.
- Provide technical support to contractors, homeowners, and the general public regarding construction projects.
- Administer the City's code enforcement and neighborhood enhancement programs, including inspecting private properties for code violations related to structure conditions, weeds, rubbish, and vehicles.
- Act as a liaison between the public and the City Planner.
- Assist the Public Works Superintendent as needed.
- Prepare reports and maintain clear, accurate documentation related to inspections and permit applications.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent, plus two (2) years of experience in general construction or related fields or two (2) years of experience in municipal or jurisdictional building inspection experience, or a combination of both.
- Knowledge: Familiarity with building materials, modern construction methods, and the principles of building inspection. Strong understanding of building codes, zoning laws, and construction regulations.
- Skills: Ability to interpret and enforce building codes, read and understand building plans, and write clear inspection reports. Strong communication skills and the ability to work well with property owners, contractors, and the public. Must be skilled at using a computer.
Certifications & Licenses:
- ICC Building Inspection Certification
- Plans Examiner Certification required within 12 months of employment.
- Valid California driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform inspections in a variety of environments, including crawl spaces, attics, and rooftops.
- Ability to climb ladders, work in confined spaces, and endure dusty or noisy conditions.
- Physical ability to carry a 10-pound ladder and navigate uneven terrain.
Additional Requirements:
- Flexibility to attend training sessions, seminars, and workshops, including some after-hours events.
- Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions and to handle emergency overtime as needed.

Pay: $4,705.00 - $5,849.00 per month
