The Code Enforcement Officer I,II,III - Building Inspections performs responsible skilled technical work conducting building and housing codes inspections and re-inspections for compliance with NC Building Codes and other state and local laws. for the Business and Community Development department.

Minimum Qualifications: Building Inspections I
- Associate’s degree from an accredited college with course work in engineering or university or equivalent;
- Driver’s license valid in NC and good driving record;
- Possession of one Standard Level I Certificate from the NC Code Officials Qualifications Board or ability to obtain a Building Level I Standard Certificate within 12 months of employment;
- Ability to obtain a minimum of three Level I Certifications from the NC Code Officials Qualifications Board in three years of employment or the ability to obtain a combination of Level I, II, or III certifications from the NC Code Officials Qualifications Board within three years of employment;
- An equivalent combination of education or experience in any of the four construction management trades (building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing) or similar field and experience may be considered.
Minimum Qualifications: Building Inspections II
- Associate’s degree from an accredited college with course work in engineering or university or equivalent;
- Driver’s license valid in NC and good driving record;
- A combination equivalent to:
- Possession of Standard Level I Certificates in any two of the following trades from the NC Code Officials Qualifications Board (NC COQB): building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical; and
- One Level II Certificate in either the building, plumbing, mechanical, or electrical trade from the NC COQB; and
- Ability to obtain a Probationary Level II Certificate in an additional field from the NC COQB within one year;
- Two to five years of experience in building inspections;
- Combination education and experience equivalent to two to five years in a construction related field.
Minimum Qualifications: Building Inspections III
- Associate’s degree from an accredited college with course work in engineering or university or equivalent;
- Driver’s license valid in NC and good driving record;
- Comprehensive knowledge of standard office practices and procedures, equipment, computer software, and customer service techniques;
- A combination equivalent to:
- Possession of Standard Level I Certificates in all four of the building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical trades from the NC Code Officials Qualifications Board NC (COQB); and
- Two Level II Certificates in either the building, plumbing, mechanical, or electrical trade from the NC COQB; and
- Ability to obtain a Standard Level III Certificate from the NC COQB within one year;
- Five years or more of experience in building inspections;
- Combination education and experience equivalent to two years in a construction related field preferred;
- Exceptional customer service skills;
- Combination of education and experience equivalent to two to five years in a construction related field.
Work Schedule
Monday-Friday; 7:30am-4:30pm and after hours as needed.
