Physical RequirementsWork in this class is defined as heavy work requiring physical exertion in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Employee has to perform physical activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing. Employee must have the visual acuity to visually inspect small defects or parts, operation or inspection of machines and earth moving equipment, use of measurement devices, and to determine the neatness and accuracy of work assigned. Employee must have the stamina to work for extended periods, some of which may be emergency situations. Working ConditionsWork is performed primarily in outside environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold with snow and ice. Employee is subject to noise which may cause the employee to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. Employee is subject to vibration, such as exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body and is also subject to workplace hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts or exposure to chemicals, oils, fuels, and potential for blood borne pathogens in raw untreated sewage. Employee is subject to atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors, dusts and oils. Employee is exposed to moving or parked vehicles, stray or loose animals, insects, broken glass and metal and other conditions associated with solid waste collections. If employee does not pass proficiency test, the employee will complete the applicable training hours before being allowed another attempt at the proficiency test. This method will be repeated until employee is able to successfully pass a proficiency test. Proficiency testing will be conducted by the Public Works Supervisor and Public Works Crew Leader. General Maintenance Worker 1Employees in this classification must be able to operate, maintain, and have knowledge of certain types of equipment used in the maintenance of grounds throughout the city including, but not limited to, roadways, right of ways, city parks, and other city property. Employees at the General Maintenance Worker I level are considered entry level and will work toward achieving a pass rating through proficiency testing on the following: Push Mower – (20 hours of operation plus knowledge of maintenance including, but not limited to, changing oil, changing and cleaning filters, sharpening mower blades)Zero Turn Mower – (20 hours of operation plus knowledge of maintenance, including but not limited to, changing oil, changing and cleaning filters, sharpening mower blades).Back pack blower – (10 hours of operation plus knowledge of maintenance)Weed Eater – (20 hours of operation plus knowledge of maintenance including, but not limited to, changing string, changing and cleaning filters).
