Job Summary: This position is a supervisory and technical position that is responsible for enforcement of the building codes, regulations, and construction standards with the City of McDonough. This role involves ensuring that all construction projects, from residential to commercial, comply with safety, health and structural requirements. Building Officials play a critical role in maintaining public safety and ensuring that all construction activities are legally compliant and properly executed.
Major Duties:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Plans, directs, and supervises the Building Inspections Division engaged in the day-to-day activities which directly relate to the enforcement of the zoning ordinance as well as the building, electrical, housing, plumbing, heat and air conditioning codes;
- Reviews plans, specifications, and blueprints to ensure they meet building codes, zoning laws, and other regulations.
- Schedules, assigns, inspects, and evaluates work; instructs and trains in correct methods and procedures; monitors work on a daily basis; reviews and evaluates employee performance;
- Conducts field inspections of residential and commercial construction sites and structures to ensure compliance with city, county, state and federal codes, ordinances and regulations; maintains inspection log;
- Attends and/or facilitates meetings (i.e. pre-construction, mediation, etc) per directive of Community Development Director;
- Ability to provide guidance to the public and contractors regarding building codes, permit processes, and safety regulations.
- Approves plans and specifications for proposed residential and commercial construction;
- Modifies, inspects and recommends corrective action for drainage, erosion and sedimentation control on individual subdivision and/or commercially developed lots;
- Finalizes codes and ordinances for contractors and property owners, answers questions related to building construction, codes and regulations;
- Inspects unsafe buildings to include those that are burned or abandoned and recommends abatement and/or condemnation procedures if code enforcement officers and/or Assistant Building Official is absent;
- Inspects buildings for type of occupancy in relation to building type;
- Issues warnings, stop-work orders and citations for non-compliance;
- Issues building permits for construction, renovation, and demolition, and ensure all paperwork is in order.
- Inputs inspection reports in computer for access and storage;
- Attends and participates in meetings regarding assigned site locations and projects;
- Ensure that all construction projects are carried out safely and that risks are minimized through adherence to safety codes and standards.
- Receives, reviews and authorizes building permits for development of all uses within the City;
- Performs other duties as assigned;
- Operates vehicle in the performance of duties; and
- Attends Henry County Soil and Water Conservation District monthly meetings.
Skills and Qualifications:

- Knowledge of generally accepted construction and building practices;
