What are the responsibilities and job description for the Police Officer (Certified) position at City of North Miami?

This is general duty police work consisting of patrolling an assigned area, responding to requests for police service, conducting preliminary investigations and performing other related police duties in accordance with established criteria. A Police Officer is required to exercise initiative and discretion in the performance of his/her duties and will be faced with emergency situations. This work involves an element of personal danger.
Enforces the laws and ordinances of the City and all other pertinent laws;
Patrols an assigned area during a specific period on foot or in motorized police equipment;
Checks doors and windows and examines premises of unoccupied buildings or residences in order to detect any suspicious conditions;
Investigates suspicious conditions and complaints and makes arrests of persons who violate laws and ordinances;
Accompanies prisoners to headquarters, jail or court and appears in court as arresting officer;
Testifies in court as required;
Directs traffic and either arrests or issues citations to those who break traffic laws;
Checks automobile parking in restricted areas and issues citations when necessary;
Responds to fires or accidents in assigned area as directed, gives all possible assistance, and prepares necessary reports;
Maintains order in crowds and attends parades, funerals and other public gatherings;
Searches for stolen cars and wanted or missing persons;
Conducts investigations and enforces City and State laws pertaining to juvenile offenders;
Answers criminal complaints and takes necessary corrective action;
Gives advice on laws, ordinances and general information to the public;
Prepares comprehensive reports of activities for review of superior officers;
Performs firstaid and rescue duties. 
Must provide State of Florida Law Enforcement Certificate (must be submitted at time of application)
2.     Minimum age: 21 
3.     Must be a U.S. citizen 
4.     Must have high school diploma or equivalent 
5.     Must have a valid driver's license and meet the North Miami Police Department's driving standards, and the ability to receive a State of Florida driver's license, Class E or higher, by the date of appointment. (Out of State applicants will be required to provide a copy of their driving record from the current State of issuance.) 
6.     Must be of good moral character
7.     Never have received a dishonorable discharge from any branch of the U.S. armed service
8.     Must have 20/30 vision or better (corrected or uncorrected)
9.     Must qualify on the Motor Skills/Physical Abilities Test and must be taken at Broward College, Davie, Campus, Miami Police Academy (350 NW 2 Ave, Miami, FL 33128), or at any FDLE location approved by this Agency, offering this test (Test must be completed within the last 6 months and required at time of application).
 
NOTE: Applicants are responsible for contacting Broward College or Miami Police Academy for Motor Skills/Physical Abilities tests, or any other FDLE approved location to register, schedule testing and pay all fees associated with testing.
 
Prior to employment, all applicants placed on the Eligible List will be required to qualify on the following: Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ); Video assessment (B-PAD); complete background investigation; Truth Verification Examination (CVSA); Psychological Evaluation; Comprehensive Medical Examination, including drug screen; and Interview with the Police Chief.
 
Residency- Those candidates claiming North Miami residence preference points must present proof at the time of application.
 
Failure to qualify on any of the above listed tests/selection phases will result in disqualification for this position.
Good social and general intelligence;
Good knowledge of the traffic laws of the State of Florida;
Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions,
Good judgment;
Some skill in the use of firearms;
Some powers of observation and memory;
Excellent moral character;
Ability to operate a motor vehicle;
Good knowledge of the traffic laws of the State of Florida;
Ability to distinguish dominant hues of red, green and brown;
Ability to render first aid;
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing, to groups and individuals;
Ability to weigh facts and maintain objectivity in making decisions;
Ability to exercise tact, diplomacy and courtesy in dealing with a variety of people;
Ability to adjust to changes in assignments and work shifts without adverse effects upon performance.
Ability to discern objects and people clearly while directing traffic or performing other police duties.

Candidates must pass a background investigation and medical examination prior to employment. Per Federal law, we hire only U.S. citizens or lawfully authorized aliens who provide proof of their identity and employment eligibility.

VETERAN’S PREFERENCE: will be given to eligible veterans and spouses of veterans as outlined in Florida Administrative Code 55A-7, Florida Statutes, Chapter 295 & Chapter2003-42 Laws of Florida. Candidates claiming veteran’s preference must present original or certified copy of DD214 and proof of disability dated within the last twelve (12) months (if applicable) at time of application.
