General Purpose for Job: This is a supervisory position responsible for the development and the supervision of the Recreation Department’s youth or adult activities and programs.
The coordinator reports directly to the Recreation Supervisor and is responsible for planning, organizing, developing, and supervising existing, as well as, new adult and youth programs and activities including summer camp, concerts in the park and special events. Work also includes assistance with office procedures, development of flyers and newsletters, and assistance in the development of seasonal brochures. Work includes any other related activities as directed by the Director of Recreation and Public Lands and/or Recreation Supervisor.
DUTIES (The duties listed below are illustrative of the work performed by this classification. All duties are essential functions of the job unless otherwise noted with an asterisk.)
· Develops, plans and makes recommendations for programs and sports activities and assists the Director and/or Supervisor in the development of goals and objectives. May be assigned to work on specific programs focusing on youth or adults as required by the Supervisor.
· Interviews applicants and makes recommendations for seasonal program positions.
· Directly supervises seasonal personnel running various programs and activities, including such programs as Summer Camp and all other summer-related activities.
· Performs administrative tasks including reservation management, data entry, answering phones and handling inquiries from the public.
· Develops, prints and distributes program flyers and brochures.
· Meets and communicates with numerous community groups and organizations in an ongoing effort to offer and develop recreational activities.
· Performs related work as required.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Required to qualify for position)
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; a required; Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management or related field.
Experience: Previous experience working with youth in recreation programs and endeavors.
A different combination of education and experience may be acceptable if deemed equivalent.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Required for satisfactory performance. Those which may be acquired after hire are noted with an asterisk.)
Skill and Ability to:
· Develop, plan, initiate, and implement organized recreation activities, games, sports, and other activities.
· Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc), Canva and other relevant software applications.
· Communicate effectively both orally and in writing to staff, patrons, and the general public.
· Supervise some programs and special events that require working evenings and weekends.
License or Certification Required: None
Physical Demands: Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings and all weather conditions. Frequent bending, stooping, lifting, carrying and transporting recreation equipment.
Scheduling Demands and Constraints: Work requires availability for some scheduled evenings and weekends.
