Duties: Performs duties to promote compliance with laws regulating animal treatment. Will be subject to stand-by or call-out service (after hours). Pick up and remove stray, unwanted, diseased or dead animals. Responsible for animal welfare and proper confinement or disposition. Work with veterinarians and citizens in quarantine of suspected diseased animals. Respond to citizen complaints and investigate alleged violations of animal laws and regulatory ordinances. Educate citizens about laws and regulations relating to the control, licensing, vaccination, adoption and care of animals. Patrol assigned areas to catch, handle, restrain, confine, transport and impound stray, sick, injured and abandoned animals using specialized equipment, methods and techniques. Visually inspect animals to determine medical condition, care received and to decide on the most appropriate course of action to be taken to prevent inhumane treatment of animals. Issue warnings or citations and set up return inspection calls to ensure compliance with laws and ordinances. Conduct investigation and prepare written reports of incidents. Prepare accurate detailed records of daily activities and update the information of each call within the computerized program on a daily basis. Assist with training new employees. Testify in court as a witness in animal control related cases. Perform animal euthanasia. Receive and dispatch calls for service. Maintain shelter by performing such duties as recovery of animals, cleaning, feeding and other duties that may be required. Observe areas of alleged violations and interviews available witnesses to determine if laws are being violated. Participates in educational programs presented to the community. Perform other duties as needed. Work the assigned schedule and comply with City timekeeping and attendance policy. Must have and maintain, without interruption, all necessary licenses, certifications, clearances, and/or job requirements.

Qualifications: High School diploma or GED. Valid Texas Driver's license and a good driving record. Certification as a Basic Animal Control Officer within one year from hire date. Certification as a Euthanasia Technician within one year from hire date. Affinity for dealing with animals in a caring and responsible manner. PREFERRED: Bi-lingual (English/Spanish). Experience working with and handling animals. Ability to identify dog and cat breeds and various types of wildlife, including birds. Experience and good record of working with the public. Common computer operations and keyboard data entry input.

  • As an employee, you will contribute a portion of your salary each pay-period towards your retirement and the City will match your contribution by 200%. Example, if you contribute $100, the City will contribute $200.
  • Civilian employees accumulate vacation at the following rates:
    • Less than 6 years of service - two weeks of vacation per year.
    • From 6 to less than 11 years of service - three weeks of vacation per year.
    • From 11 to less than 21 years of service â€" four weeks of vacation per year.
    • From 21 to less than 26 years of service â€" five weeks of vacation per year.
    • From 26 years of service and up â€" six weeks of vacation per year.
